I got diagnosed with mono 10 days ago , i did a mono test and it was positive.
Symptoms:, lymph nodes swollen, body aches , fatigue,
biggest concern is my blood test, my liver enzymes came at 900, which is like 40 times more than normal…is this normal? and has it happened to anyone?
I also did tests for Hep A , B and C, all were negative
my other Liver tests like bilirubin were normal.
Is mono actually causing the liver enzymes to increase this much? is this dangerous?
Possibly. It’s also possible that Ramza is being an ass. Also, I think you’d be better off asking about this in one of the webMD forums. Or y’know, just skip online communities and ask an actual doctor.
A) What tests were performed for your mono and liver?
B) Who did the tests?
C) What did the test that you claim said you had mono evaluate?
D) What liver enzymes are up?
E) When was this test performed?
F) Any abdominal pain or jaundice? Were there changes in the color of your stools?
And last but not least, G) your doctor should’ve gone over these results with you, explained what they meant and proposed a course of action. If this did not happen he is an incompetent and you need to seek medical attention elsewhere immediately to further investigate signs of liver failure. This is not doable over the internet. Liver enzymes can go up during mono, but this is something your doctor should’ve talked to you about. You should be evaluated regularly to see if this resolves itself and to make sure that what is causing the liver inflammation is not another more process you aren’t being treated for.
A) tests that were performed were the mono test which was positive, liver test Was ALT which was at 900
B) my doctor
C) it evaluated the mono virus and the liver enzyme
D)Only ALT is up
E) last week for mono, and ALt test was 3 days ago
F) no pain just cramps, and acid reflux, nausea bloating
My doctor said Mono can do this to your liver but he was kind of surprised it wen this high, but he said mono CAN do this, my concern is that every time i did a liver test my ALT went higher , so this means w.e thats happening is still active, Thats what worried me, Im trying to get a second opinion , i have an appointment in 3 days again with him, but hes just gonna say the same thing. I have an Ultra sound formy liver next month, again thats one month of just waiting, what if it gets worse,
Can you have Hep, and not show on your blood test?
So basically you looked at your blood test results and you’re worried about a value you don’t understand. You’re afraid that it will mean your liver is going down the toilet. If your doctor was worried, he would have sent you to the closest ER because you don’t mess around with liver failure. When you see your doctor, just ask him when he expects the ALT level to go down. Communicate to him that you don’t understand what it means and that this worries you.
It is pretty damn unlikely that a test for hepatitis would come back negative and if your doctor was REALLY concerned about heptatitis, he would probably have asked you a bunch of questions to evaluate the risk you contracted Hep a/b/c (sex, iv drug use, travel to foreign countries) or if you are taking any medications or have an immune deficiency that would hide the presence of a hepatitis infection. Until you show signs of liver dysfunction (for example, jaundice), you don’t have much cause for further investigation or interventions.
As things stand, it doesn’t sound like you have any reason to worry about anything and you will be wasting your time by going for a 2nd opinion. You’re already scheduled for another visit with your doctors and for a third for your ultrasound. Until then, just focus on getting better. Mono sucks and it will take a while before you recover.
I broke my ankle yesterday and am having surgery done on Friday. The thing is I’m a drug addict. Does buprenorphine work as well for killing pain as oxycodone? As of right now they are going to be giving me oxycodone but that is what I was originally addicted to. I’m also on Drug Court (really really intense probation) and they would rather me not be on narcotic medication, but I figure buprenorphine would be at least a bit better than oxycodone.
The buprenorphine is a fine pain killer. Giving you the equivalent pain reduction is just a matter of dosing and your talking about how well it is managing your pain with your doctor.
It is honestly a better idea to take this over oxycodone because of your previous history of addiction. While both are opioids, buprenorphine is used to treat opioid dependency, like methadone. It sounds contradictory to treat opioid addiction with an opioid, but that’s because they don’t all work exactly the same way. It will help you ease off and diminish withdrawal.
I’ve read in Burrough’s novel Junky that back in the 50’s, to help a patient with heroin withdrawal they would give them a stronger opoid, started with a D or something. I forgot, but it was apparently just as bad and often patients would become addicted to that.
