I took a SO3 break to do MMX Command Mission, good game, good story considering it’s based on Megaman, loved the gameplay even if some things were a little easily twinked out coughcoughAxlcough
What does this mean? Pocket review time!
Backstory: Reploids discover this material called Force Metal around a manmade island city called Giga City. They start trying to apply this in various ways and discover that while it enhances the potential of reploids, it also risks turning them in mavericks. Before the federation government can apply legislation to control the use and all, BAM, a force called the Rebellion Army arises from new forcemetal enhanced experimental combat types and a tactical type named Epsilon who commands the rebellion.
The original covert team meant to infiltrate the city and stop this rebellion got pwned, and so they send in X and Zero to solve this crisis with a C class hunter named Shadow who knows the area well and serves as a scouter.
General Gameplay: The system itself is turnbased, with a FFXesque bar that tells you who gets the next turn and so you can plan accordingly between healing and offense or defense. In terms of healing, there’s no items. You have no potions or anything similar, the only items you have are to A) Cure status effects B) Cause status effects C) Increase stats D) Recharge your hyper mode. Healing is done via the use of subtanks which you can carry up to 10 (or at least, that’s the number I found.) Every healing operation takes a certain % of the tank, for example, healing a char by 50% of his life takes 33% of a tank, full heal takes 50%, 50% heal party takes 80% and full heal on a party takes a full tank. The only way to recharge the tanks are at base, via drops of certain enemies or yellow item crystals in ‘dungeons’. During combat, you can do the following:
Attack, using main weapon and/or subweapon 1-2 which are of your choice, those can do direct damage, statuses, enhance XP/$/FMP value of enemies, steal items, enhance your character (100% hit rate, increase damage for 1 attack, create body doubles to attack with you, etc.)
Special, unique to all characters, drains all weapon energy.
Defense, take 25% def, half regeneration of weapon energy, turn comes faster
Subtank, turn comes faster
Item, turn comes faster
Hyper Mode, does not cost turn
Run
Analyse (if you have the analyser equipped, dunno why you wouldn’t), does not cost turn.
Every round, a character recharges weapon energy, the amount dependant of who it is and his equipped force metals. Subweapons take a certain quantity of WE to fire and specials are more effective or you get more time depending of your amount of WE, you need 50% to just use your special.
Hyper Mode is generally reserved for bosses or ‘super’ monsters, such as the Giant Mettaur to name one, or the Belladonnas. You can only maintain it for X rounds (X and Marino can do 5 rounds, Cinnamon can do 4, Zero and Massimo can do 3, Axl and Spider can do 2) but that number can be boosted with items. The recharger items CANNOT be bought so they’re rare and valuable, but I used them very rarely. In Hyper mode, HP goes up, damage output goes WAY up, X and Zero get different specials, def and speed goes up as well, Marino gets INSANE speed increase (she gets 3 rounds for each round the boss got.) You can prematurely cease being in Hyper so I used it for surgical strikes (100% weapon power, go Hyper, use special, return to normal, repeat.)
Specials are unique actions to each characters, some are not better with a full charge but you get more time to draw out the full potential.
X: Charge shot, power is relative to available WE, 100% = automatic critical hit. It’s a spread shot, hits all.
X Fire Armor: Collider Shot, multihit ball similar to Gaea Armor shot. It’s considered to be thunder elemental.
Ultimate Armor: Gunslinger, X fires all guns, more WE means more time for button presses and ownage. Hits 1 target, flak may harm those around it a little, about 10-15%.
Zero: Command Arts, enter commands Street Fighter Style and he does moves, more WE = more time for longer combo.
Black Zero: Same as above, more power.
Absolute Zero: Calamity Arts, commands show on the screen, press them to do hits, more time for more WE. Water Elemental.
Spider: I forget the name of his Hyper, but he basically becomes invisible and does more damage, he’s invulnerable during that time, but his special is worthless. It’s ‘Give Hand’, you get 5 cards and you can change hand once if it’s bad, it’s based on poker, the better the hand the better the damage. I never used Spider the second I could dump him due to my bad luck at cards and hatred for gamblebased attacks.
Marino: Trickster, more damage, insane speed. Her special is Slots, you match symbols and can either drain life, steal items, try an instant kill shot, do double damage, do triple damage to all enemies. You start with only drain/steal/double damage but you get more as time goes on.
Massino: He gets this bigass beam that can do double damage and 4 status effects early on, but as you use him, after a certain amount of times you use the Death Ray (It’s not the real name), he gets an extra bar that gives a certain % chance of a critical hit, 80% if you press it to the max. I usually boost critical and damage first, then try to add status effects. In Glint Armor form, his damage level is just sick. He’s pretty slow though, but with a scythe or other ‘hit all’ weapon he’s pretty good since he’s the tank char, very weak to elemental attacks.
Cinnamon: The cute healer nurse girl, her Hyper is a maid outfit, but it bolsters defense pretty efficiently. Her raw damage is pretty low but most of her weapons have status effects on them, lowering power, speed, armor or shield. Her special is to heal the entire party for a %, you gotta spin the C or R3 stick to create hearts on the screen up to 10 hearts, at 10 it’s full cure but you need at LEAST 95% power to reach that.
Axl: Hyper is Stealth Mode, like Spider, except Axl is just BETTER. His weapons are either specialist (extra damage vs types) or multihit, up to 8 hits with dual SMGs. 8 hits in Stealth means 500 a hit, use a hawkeye for autohit, power charge for extra damage and you can do around 6000 damage a round, plus he’s invincible. His special is DNA morph, transform in a boss monster you defeated and use their strongest move. Pretty nasty, useful in random or boss fights.
And that’s all of the chars.
Music: It’s on par, nothing special for Capcom but it fits the mood and type, although it’s hardly the best thing I’ve ever heard. Axl’s theme is so cheerful it makes me sick to my stomach.
I personally liked the game alot, it took me 30 hours and I didn’t finish the area beneath Central Tower yet, a good buy or at least rental for anyone.
