Mario and Luigi 3

Does it deserve its own thread? Eh, it was the only DS title to catch my interest, or the only NEW one anyway.

Blurry youtube trailer.

A few observed points:

Bowser is playable, while Mario and Luigi seem to be inside his body on a microscopic level. Unknown if this is the way the entire game will go, or just a segment. But I’ve always been such a fan of the Koopa King that any game that makes him playable gets an automatic bonus ten points in my book.

Some people have commented seeing both the Shroobs and Fawful in the trailer, and some of the preview images. I didn’t notice em myself, but there were a couple of enemies in one screenshot that looked decidedly fawful-ish. Right here.

Katamari Toad-acy?

Yeah ok, anyway. I enjoyed the first M&L game. The second was… alright, though it did a few things that rubbed me the wrong way. Namely, eliminating bros points and reducing the team efforts to Bros ‘items’, and going from the open-world-ish BeanBean kingdom of the first to the ‘level based’ hub castle in the second. Also, despite being labeled ‘Partners in Time’, the time travel element was largely superficial, it was more like MARS ATTACKS!!, but with Mario.

I always knew a third M&L game would come around. But I always theorized that Wario and Waluigi would play a role, guess I was wrong. Maybe in #4.

At least, going by the above screenshot, they’re not just recycling the bros’ animations from Partners in Time, and are reanimating them even though they could probably get away with being lazy. That, at least, strikes me as more effort than was put into Super Paper Mario.

EDIT: Coincidentally, as Mario and Luigi 3 is announced, Super Mario Bros Z episode 7 is released at long last. Seems Alvin-Earthworm found his motivation again.

From what I’ve seen so far it looks like that’s going to be the former option (or at least will probably end up as the game’s big gimmick like the babies were in PiT) with Bowser exploring the current kingdom of residence (or the parts that Mario and Luigi can’t reach), and the Bros will, quite possibly, end up looking for Peach in the belly of the beast while helping Bowser out from the inside.

As for story, it looks as if somebody slipped the residents of the current kingdom those P-Balloons from SMW and will probably require the Bros to do some damn pluming for once as makeshift Pepto-Bismal. <.<

Call me when they make a new Paper Mario game. I’ve never liked Mario & Luigi very much.

And on a completely different note, I l.o.v.e the Mario & Luigi games. They somehow manage to keep that Mario-ish charm even in RPG form and they are always fun. Not being reduced to pressing the A button in battles also helps.

Thanks for the info about the new Z btw.

This is awesome news, M&L has always been quality, so I can’t wait for this one.

I’ve never been able to get into the Mario & Luigi games. They’re on the same level as Paper Mario. They lack something Legend of the Seven Stars had. It’s analogous to the degeneration of certain elements of the Zelda games from the 16-bit to the current era. Particularly, in that series, going from being greeted by “Yo, Link!” in Kakariko in ALttP to Tingle in MM and the lake cannon guys in TP. They’ve replaced colloquial-ness with random childishness trying to be charming.

Exactly. I didn’t really like the GBA M&L… while the gameplay was okay and interesting, I felt the characters and world weren’t as charming as the Mario games can be. Fawful was hilarious, but all those stupid beans just annoyed me.

I think the M&L series is just kind of…well, mediocre. SMRPG was a well-made game for its time, and though it didn’t age well, it’s by no means a terrible game.

Mario & Luigi, though…I dunno. The combat is bipolar, like it wants to be as action-rpg-esque as it can while not being an action-RPG. The changing bros to do wacky jump spin hammer bullshit was neat for like 10 minutes, but then it got tedious. Nothing aesthetically really stands out. The dialogue isn’t very funny.

Paper Mario, on the other hand, is brilliant. The combat is more like SMRPG when it was turn-based, and it went the whole way when it became an action RPG. The entire aesthetic of the game is really zany and awesome. The puzzle element is similar to M&L but it doesn’t feel like you’re switching back and forth between partners every ten seconds. And seriously? Some of the absolute funniest games I’ve ever played. Who the hell didn’t laugh at, in Super Paper Mario, Francis’s security tests to verify it was him? “RPGs should be at least 280 hours long, not counting sidequests. (True/False)” “I like to get complain on message boards about games I’ve never played. (True/False)” lmao! I also think that the main town of each Paper Mario game is incredibly fun to explore. I think that’s a very important part of having a game with a central town/base thing. It’s exciting to come back with a new partner and see what you can find.

So yeah. SMRPG was okay, but there’s no use crying for a new one in that vein. Mario & Luigi isn’t bad, but it definitely isn’t good. Like I said in the SMRPG for Virtual Console thread, “Call me when they make a new Paper Mario.”
