I didn’t think about that at first. Maybe they’re thinking selling the bigger bulkier version for 300 is a bargin. Oh well. There are going to be people out there (Parents) who don’t know any better.
On the other hand, isn’t the elite going to recieve a price drop pretty soon?
Well, they’re getting there.
If the only major difference is going to be the OS and the size, a pro to the big one is that the slims are supposed to have cheapier blu-ray players than the big ones.
I’d be less concerned about BC if I didn’t still own a PS2 and if they weren’t still dirt cheap. Granted it kinda sucks I can’t sell mine for a little extra cash as a result, but meh.
Granted I’m still not likely to buy a PS3 any time soon, but this makes it slightly less unlikely.
The reasoning for this is to try and get the remaining 80 GB PS3s out of the market before the Slim hits shelves. Granted, they should’ve done this a bit sooner so they could actually pull that off properly. And once the Slim comes out, the pricing becomes a moot point anyways.
It’s nice and all, but I’m still probably not gonna get a PS3 anytime soon. Still too much money for me, and besides, it needs more great games. As far as BC is concerned, it’d be a major plus, but I figure Sony can skim on it as long as they have the PS2 at about $100 right now (that and how many people own one).
Unfortunately my PS2 died recently which is why I was hoping for a BC PS3 so then I wouldn’t need to buy both. BC, especially PS2 and PS1, and the new price (even if it wasn’t as low) definately would have been a sell on the spot point for me.
What I like about BC is that it keeps things simple. You don’t need two or three consoles; you can just have everything combined in one. Killing the BC in the PS3 was a rather dumb move, accomplished little, and only further infuriated an increasingly frustrated fanbase.
The slim looks cool, to be sure, but the generation’s already starting to wind down a little. It’s too late for Sony to recapture their glory days; the best they can hope for is some momentum when they release the inevitable PS4.
Ultratech: no it doesn’t make sense that they’re trying to clear the shelves because everywhere the slim is advertised as the same price as the console they’re trying to phase out. There is no secret. For now I actually wonder if they’ll remove the packaged in game from the slim to reduce costs as we haven’t seen anything regarding what game it was going to come with.
Sony’s little gameplan considers if they can’t properly put BC on a PS3, they’ll charge out the ass for the PS2 they still have out on the market. They assume that people who buy a PS3 have or had at one time a PS2. They also assume that people want to buy a PS3 for the new generation of games and not necessarily for the capability to play the old stuff (despite everybody wanting it). Therefore, they get people to buy PS3 and skew 'em with the lack of BC so they get a PS2 (or not). Incidentally, they still make money no matter what. And the PS2 is still selling pretty damn well, so I don’t see BC coming to a PS3 anytime soon. Would it be nice to have a BC compatible PS3? You bet your ass it would.
Sin: What I mentioned was Sony’s general plan. Is it stupid? Yeah, but try telling them that. If they were smart, they would’ve lowered the price a bit more to move the old PS3s off the market sooner. As far as any in-game package goes, I haven’t read or seen anything about it other than Japan getting a special Gundam package (go figure).
Now why do they want the old PS3 out of the market? With the new slim PS3 coming out, Sony’s effectively rebranding the whole PS3 brand, with the new Slim and logo change. After all, who wants an outdated POS when you got a shiny new machine staring you in the face. But Sony did fuck up considerably with the whole announcement and shit since with the lowered price, nobody will buy out the old hardware with the Slim just around the corner.
