Is it possible to download Wikipedia to your computer?

I was curious, it would definately help in some of my research to just have it on the computer and not go on line to see.

…You are not fucking serious.

Yeah, but you should wait a while, for Arlo Guthrie to be removed from the “Fictitious Cyborg” list.

actually yes

http://download.wikimedia.org/

you would want the html dump

Alternatively, you could stay online.

Or wait for the PRINTED edition that’s in the plans right now. (No, I did not make that up.) O_O

Does it include a whiteboard and marker for you to make revisions and fact checks?

<strike>The moment after you finish downloading it, it’s already outdated. Lots of people will have made lots of changes to lots of articles. What you get is just a snapshot of what wikipedia was when you started the download.</strike> Forget what I said, I just saw how they distribute it in dumps.

Also, I think Wikipedia’s servers can handle searches on such a humongous database better than your PC.

Wikipedia’s search function is sort of terrible.

I never knew works of fiction were credible research sources. Next essay I write, I’m quoting Pratchett!

Ok, use google then, just add “site:wikipedia.org” to the search.

How is wikipedia a work of fiction? o_O; …or Pratchett, for that matter? Last time I checked he was a person. Nothing wrong with quoting people.

Or maybe they’ll just print the whole book in pencil

I’ll just wait until the white board version comes out.

Give me a moment and I’ll whip up a program that will not only copy every article on Wikipedia to your hard drive, but preserve its “anyone can edit” properties. And by “anyone” I mean me, and by “edit” I mean “edit any file on your hard drive”.

Certainly. And what maximum awesome you’d be able to spruce up your essay with by adding a Pratchett quote. With a citation, of course.

There’s been a DVD-ROM version in Germany for many, many years now.

Did you just ask how Pratchett’s books are works of fiction? Duuuuuuuude have you read any of his books?

This thread ASTOUNDS me.

I’d like you to try something for me Zig. I want you to not breathe for 2 minutes.

I think DT misunderstood and thought Pratchett himself was being considered a work of fiction. I think.
