Instead of having bands you like..

I’ll be honest, I chuckled when I read that.

Also, MTV boo, etc.

Is there a reason I should know about Vai? you didn’t know about him until you heard about him either. I’m more interested in playing guitar than worshipping guitar gods. As I told Steve, Santana and Petrucci are probably the ONLY famous guitarists I can name.

I like Destiny’s Child darnit. Mainly because I don’t look at them in a way that would allow me to see them as something wrong with modern feminism. I see them as women trying to get money by making music. Which is…uh, the main reason why just about any artist really makes music. If it’s not the main reason, it’s has to be up there. Besides, “Nasty Girl” was a good song.

Just to stay on topic: I don’t like metal bands. I don’t like songs with anyone screaming at me like I’m deaf the entire time their singing. You know, those songs where all you hear is a freakin’ guitar throughout the entire thing being totally louder than neccessary and obscuring whatever meaing the song is trying to convey, if it is trying to convey anything. It makes no sense to me, whatsoever. I listen to music, whenever I do, not to be screamed at but to enjoy something. I don’t know, maybe it’s a side effect of being raised on the oldies and Jazz all the time. Seriously though, I can’t take it.

Different strokes for different folks I suppose.

Well. Here’s more vai.

Crossroads
The Reaper

And I don’t like the band… uh… shit I forgot their name. They’re some famous local band around here. Just a bunch of assholes playing cookie-cutter emo bullshit.

Steve Vai and Yngwie Malmsteen are considered “virtuouso”(I’m not sure if I spelled that correctly) guitarists. Steve Vai puts tonnes of emotion into his place, and some consider him the greatest guitarist to live today. He’s also considered a professional wanker. hahah! I can’t recomend to much by him because I don’t listen to much of his stuff.

Yngwie Malmsteen is also considered a virtuoso. He plays lightning fast, hell, he makes lightning looks like a slug. I recommend the song “Black Star”, “Far Beyond The Sun”, and “Disciples Of Hell”. It’s very technical stuff. All of his songs have sweep arpegios in them. Also a professional wanker. :stuck_out_tongue:

Ditto.

And Hades, why the fuck would I want to learn a song from a band I don’t like? Jesus Christ, man. And I didn’t say I hated them because they were on MTV. I was just using MTV as an example of where to find bands I really don’t like. But I can see how one could easily mistake my comment.

That is a completely false statement. You should be banned from listening to music!!! just kidding. But seriously dude, there’s a lot more to making music than just wanting to make money. It’s a form of expression. Do painters paint paintings to make thousands of dollars? Maybe some do, but I’m willing to bet most don’t.

They do it because they love it.

Mitsuko that’s kinda silly to hate a band that has the word god in their name. Though i’m only saying such since i like this one band, God Lives Underwater, they’re kinda tencho/alternative music.

I’ve never tried a Killers song, but name an MCR song and I guarantee I can play it. Because I’ve had this argument with someone before. Unless they’ve released an album since August, in which case I’ll actually need to find some sory of transcription of it. MCR is easy shit, though. Doesn’t make them talentless, because writing good songs is harder than playing them, always, but they aren’t difficult at all.

I love the way you seem to believe the Misfits’ lyrics are honestly meant to be taken seriously, but I understand how you could be confused. I mean, they sure do sound like they mean it when the sing:
‘I’m gonna take you where your body will lie
I’m take you there, my friend
I’m gonna show you where your life will end
This curse I cast, you’re Pumpkinhead!’

EDIT: Oh, and ‘Twenty Eyes’ is much harder to play than ‘I’m not okay (I promise)’ Also, vintage punk only? So modern misfits-esque bands are for some reason morally acceptable? Or metal bands who try and immitate the misfits?

Also, yeah, I know I sure don’t deserve to have an opinion because of an illusionary and magical barrier between ages.

Meh, I disagree, I’ve seen old bluesmen who could play a circle, rhumbus, or whatever the hell you want around him when they were drunk. He’s probably the best guitarist to achieve mainstream popularity, though, I’ll agree with that.

I never told you to learn a song. I was explaining why your reasons were false. If your criterion is being able to “play worth a shit,” you have no reason to hate MCR or The Killers because they both outdo Metallica in skill and quality, and you like Metallica.

Saying MCR and The Killers can’t play worth a shit is a lie. I’m not saying there aren’t other reasons to hate them, but you don’t even know why you hate them, and that makes me question your motives for hating them. Namedropping MTV didn’t make you look ilke any less of a niche music snob, either. I think you hate popularity more than you hate the bands.

The skill part is definitely true, quality is an opinion thing, but Metallica really doesn’t play all that well.

wut u mean omg they made muny so there selloutz! fight the man by staying pore! up the punx!

You can’t truly appreciate MCR or The Killers until you play their kick ass beats on your own antique harpsichord. The sound of the riffs really rock when you can hear yourself playing it on a dual-layer piano of any sort actualy, just a 100+ year old Harpsichord works best.

How are the Killers or MCR more skilled than Metallica? I find that incredibly hard to believe. I’m not saying Metallica are fantastical magic pixies of awesomeness, but just because they suck nuts now doesn’t mean they always did.

Well, playing well is skill. Quality is composition, imo. Good composition is good rhythm guitar punctuated by good lead guitar and solos. In Metallica, almost all you’ll ever hear are furious power chords or simple open arpeggios, and never at the same time. If you listen to their songs long enough, they all melt into the same bowl of homogenous musical ooze known as Metallica. There is practically NO variation in their songs.

Metalica always sounds best coming out of a genuine wild west player piano. They are hard to come by, but sometimes handle-bar mustachioed antique dealers will sell them on Ebay. Once you get one, it’s just a matter of taking the song “Master of Puppets” and converting it to one of those reader scrolls player pianos use.

Hey, be fair, they use different keys and sometimes have cool intros. But other than that, they just play rythm distorted to the point where even powerchords aren’t distinct and solos that aren’t so much theme and variation as theme. And Theme. And Theme. Repeat for four minutes.

EDIT:
Dude, you have no idea how bad I want one of those player pianos, or a handlebar moustache. Either would suffice.

If not for the intros I wouldn’t be able to distinguish one Metallica song from another.

What is it that the Killers do that make them more skilled though? Whether the genre they play is to your taste is moot. The point is you can’t exactly say the Killers are skilled, when their songs are incredibly simple to learn and play, whereas Metallica isn’t exactly easy. You might just say power chords and more power chords, but take a look at the tablature for Somebody Told Me…what do you see? Power chord after power chord, whereas Metallica will perform a power chord with impressive speed or finnesse, rather a constant strumming of power chords which sounds like nonsense.

The problem with this is, in reality it’s completely reversed. I’ve learned songs from both, and by FAR The Killers presented more of a challenge.

You might just say power chords and more power chords, but take a look at the tablature for Somebody Told Me…what do you see? An accurate transcription of Somebody Told Me would show VERY few power chords. Most of the power in that song is provided by the bassist. The intro to that song also has some pretty complicated fingerings whereas beginners who have never touched a guitar before can be weaned on Metallica and I have the friends to prove it.

The Ramones only needed 3 chords to rule, all of them power, and they were in Rock and Roll High School, a movie some people classify as “so bad it’s good”.
