Instant Messaging Programs

So yeah. I’ve been getting kinda sick about having 2 clients for my IM needs (AIM and ICQ), and I’ve been looking at some multi-IM clients, but I can’t really find one that suits my needs. Here’s what I’m looking for:

Must support uploading/downloading of buddy lists on both AIM and ICQ

Must support Unicode (Trillian doesn’t)

Must not be Trillian

Must not be Miranda

I tried out both Trilliand and Miranda, but I don’t really like them much. Gaim looks nice, but I get the DLL Hell error with zlib.dll (check the Windows Port page to see what I’m talking about), and I don’t particulary feel like messing up my download messenger and whatever uses my system32 folder. So yeah, any ideas?

Looks at the list at Freshmeat

Plenty to choose from, too bad they’re all for Linux/UNIX only… Well, except for Miranda which only exists for Windows.

Sorry, can’t help ya there.

Trillian 2.0 does, but that costs money. A major setback that.

Beyond Gaim, all I can do is reccomend you do a search on Sourceforge.net and see if you come out with a result that does the things you want it to do. I did find a couple, but then Sourceforge died.

PlanetaMessenger
Babel-IM

It went up again.

I’d love to help you, but…I know of none that support what you need…

you need to download this patch environment first before you install gaim. should be on the site. did you try that?

I’ll probably add aim and icq support to my recently installed jabberd soon. I don’t think it will support filetransfers though.

So download a client and join nulani.net nod, nod

Do you mean Trillian Pro Nul? coughcoughaskinchatlinktofreetrilprocoughcough
oh man, Im coming down with something.

GAIM should work, it just takes some fiddleing with. I used that for awhile when trillian wouldnt work.

what’s the issue of using ICQ and AIM?

Trillian Pro offers Unicode support… so that should work perfect for you… it’ll just cost you soemthing :stuck_out_tongue:

Yeah, I installed that environment thing for Gaim. the DLL Hell thing is basically that it’s trying to run the program with a zlib.dll from another folder, which is either from my download manager or windows itself. And since the only way to fix that is to rename/delete those files… yeah.

I also didn’t really like Trillian much to start with. Besides the Unicode thing, it doesn’t really work with up/down-loading the buddy lists, and it seems too stupid to remember how big I make the windows of messages. I’ll poke around with Pro though, see if that’s any better.

But first, I’ll check out those 3 things that Nul posted.

(And I don’t really want seperate clients because, unlike my desktop, I’ll be shutting down my laptop at least once a day, and I don’t particulary like having to boot up 2 programs)

Oh yeah, Jabber is great too, one protocol and then you talk with a server which translates everything to Jabber, works beautiful. =)

It’s just a shame it won’t work with file transfers… =(

Just have them auto-load?

I had them in my boot.ini for a while, but they really mess up the booting process. 2 popup ad screens from them, immediately loading though there is no internet, prompting for a connection, etc.

It works with filetransfers. You just use a bad client.

Get around to knowing what you are talking about before you talk about it.

You can disable the ad screens in your settings I believe. Plus AIM and ICQ can be set to auto load without needing to put them in the boot.ini or the Startup folder, which might avert your issues too.

What I meant was that you can’t file-transfer something via a Jabber Client to an ICQ client for example, at least not as far as I know. Jabber-Jabber works however.

I believe some of the gateways support it, and it is in any case possible to install the proxy add-on.

So yeah. After a lot of searching I found a copy of Trillian Pro that WASN’T a virus. Only problem is that it doesn’t work with 2003a contact lists ><. Does anybody know how to fix this? Because it’s really the main reason why I dislike Trillian.

EDIT: Mere SECONDS after this I figure out how. Doh. Someone please close this thread :stuck_out_tongue:
