I'm going to Paris

I’m going to Paris for my summer vacation next week. I never leave China before, and I don’t know much about Europe. Anyone give me some advise here?

I can’t speak French. Will it become a big problem?

Is… there any place I can find some special old games?:thud:

Most French people speak several languages, so you’ll probably be able to get by not knowing it. As always when traveling, be ready to accept different food, drink, mannerisms, and other aspects of culture.

I think you’ll be ok if you know enough to ask important things like the location of things like the WC (aka, bathroom)…I’m sure plenty of people there would know enough English that they could decipher somehow what you’re trying to say. Europeans are more diligent about being multilingual than most of the people here in the 'states. Of course, if all else fails, there’s always sign language.

As for the games, depends on what you’re looking for.

Good luck, and have a safe trip

France is one of the worst places I’ve gone to in terms of English speaking. Yes, I’m sure a lot of them know English, but they are not very willing to speak it. France is proud of it’s culture, and will take any opportunity to speak French. When I visited Europe, Spain, Germany and Holland all spoke English (which ranged from passable to better than North America), but France, not many people spoke English. Mind you I wasn’t in Paris for long, but I sure was lucky I took some French language courses before I left.

Not to discourage you from having a good time there, of course. Most countries encourage tourism so you won’t be shunned or booed from the city. Just don’t expect to find many people willing to speak English.

Yeah, Paris is pretty terrible on the English front. Learn to point at things a lot.

A book with basic French sentences would come in handy. IIRC the tourist attractions are multilingually equipped but don’t be weirded out if someone understands your English but doesn’t want to answer (cause it isn’t French). Anyway, France is world’s no. 1 touristic destination so you’ll survive  Have fun!

P.S. As a side note, the Louvre is fricking huge.

edit: Oh and more and more Chinese go there, so I suppose things will work out.

edit2: Tourist solidarity. A bet with good chances.

Do be sure to knock over the Eiffel Tower and plant your flag upon its ruins. It’s either you do it, or I will later. The race is on.

(Ok, so I’ve never travelled internationally. However, I did have a rather well-travelled teacher who used to say that Paris is the worst place for the stuffy cultural superiority complex, and that once you get outside it that attitude is a bit more relaxed. Just passing along what I’ve heard. Enjoy the trip!)

Very usefull information, Thanks everyone!

If they don’t want to answer my English, then I’ll speak Chinese… That’s less embarrassing.

Be sure to visit the tomb of Wilde (in the Père Lachaise cemetery.) Oh, and Napoleon.

And not that guy’s.

Be sure to have what the French call a certain… I don’t know what

Oui, zats right! A certain je ne sais quoi; and when you sip your café laté on some quiet terrasse in Monmartre, overlooking la ville, you will experience an unbelivable joie de vivre, and your voyage will certainly have a beautiful dénouement.

Have a nice trip Sun.
Oh, and keep in mind that a glass of wine could be cheaper than a glass of water in some Parisian restaurants

What an esprit, Seifer

French is so difficult…
Japanese and Korean is much easier…

French is such an awful fucking language. I had about 5 years worth of French classes and I still can’t speak a word of French. Jesus christ, speak English already.

French isn’t that hard to learn, once you’ve grasped the verb conjugations and the thirteen irregulars.

Japanese grammar, on the other hand, makes no sense >:(
