The best information I can find is fragmentary and incomplete. I don’t trust wikipedia, and all the reputable (non-hippie/non-neopagan/non-shamanist) sources say is that it shows promise for treating addiction, but it’s risky and unproven.

It should be noted that LSD and mescaline were tested in the 1950’s for effectiveness in curbing alcohol addiction. From what I remember, the results were actually quite positive. I don’t have a link to an article though.
It’s the “intense introspection” that interests me, not the hallucinations. Introspection is a kind of force modifier for experience and knowledge. By thinking about what you know and what you have lived, you can acquire greater knowledge.
This is basically my goal in life. To acquire wisdom, or intelligence, by any means possible.

You sure as hell don’t have to try psychoactive drugs to acquire wisdom or intelligence. In fact I don’t think you can even acquire intelligence. Hallucinogens do give you an experience unlike anything else, but I found it was nothing in comparison to pure sober experiences, pure intense instances experienced under little to no intoxication. Anything experienced under hallucinogens or any intoxicant is purely the result of the mind being overdriven to the point of fantasy.
Yes, hallucinogens can provide intense introspection, but emphasis is on intense. The average person does not need to experience what a schizophrenic experiences in order to live and gain wisdom. This is coming from someone who has tried a few drugs.
Intelligence doesn’t equal wisdom and vice versa.
