I like the Russians more

There is something i never understood about JW,i know that they can’t have blood transfusions,i want to know why? how does it conflict with they’re religion?

JW don’t totally oppose blood transfusions now. They’ve started accepting globulin, clotting stuff, and even plasma proteins. Their practice is more of not allowing full blood transfusions at one time. Fractionalized blood transfusions and some sort of semi-artificial hemoglobin can also be accepted.

As for why they originally banned blood transfusions, it’s based on some Old Testament verses concerning not allowing to take in blood.

You’re not allowed to drink blood, referring to cannibalism. A medical transfusion is not a sin.

All I can say is “w00t”, Should I say anything else, I think I might be flamed :stuck_out_tongue:

Before Roun posts a religious tolerance link, I will:
http://www.religioustolerance.org/witness.htm hah.
And I read through all of <a href=“http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jehovah’s_Witnesses”>this</a> too, can only recommend it (although I read the german version which, for some reason, was way longer o_o might be hidden under the “see also” links though).
Just to prevent confusion. <.<
Yes, they have my full support there. Go Russia.

I dont like Jehovas Witnesses much, in fact whenever a Jeovas Witness or Mormon comes to my door its fun to describe my own religion to them and not give them a chance to speak to me whistles

I dont like the religion much (I really dislike the idea of all splittings of religions, why cant all those Christians just call themselves Christian…), but nobody should have their freedom of religion restricted in such ways as a complete ban on a religion, regardless of the reputation of a few. Maybe I should share my perspective on this: its much easier to dislike this kind of law when you dont fit into their idea of an appropriate religion. Im a Baha’i, one of the worlds major religions (estimates range between 6 million and 10 million people last time I checked) that still isnt accepted in many (mostly Muslim) countries. Perhaps the fact that Christianity is protected in most of the world has made some of you a bit skewed on your beliefs of religious freedom.

Russia’s 1997 religion law enshrines Orthodox Christianity as the country’s predominant religion and pledges respect for Buddhism, Islam and Judaism - called traditional religions - but places restrictions on other groups.

I think the point of this ruling is a bit deeper than Jehovas Witnesses… It just takes somebody whose rights would NOT be fully available in Russia to realize that…

Hypothetically speaking:

How would you feel if your religion did not belong to their select group and you lived in Russia (or any other country without complete religious freedom)? Would you particularly like the idea that the ruling of a judge could make it illegal for you practice your religion?

Im so glad I live in the US

And I’ve said this elsewhere (I think), but I almost feel deprived that none of them have come to my house so I could mess around with 'em.

I don’t know, I read that Russian law that was quoted as just a carte blanche for the Russian Orthodox establishment to go after any religion it doesn’t really like. The autocratic trend of Russia since the end of the Cold War (and especially after Putin took over) seems strongly evident in rulings such as these.

I admit that the circumstances are dubious, though shouldn’t the state step in at some point and prevent its citizens from coming in harms way because of a small group of cultists? I could make a spin off of Catholicism that would endorse the child molesting we’ve all heard about, would making it a religion validate the molesting?

We get Mormons coming to our door over here. Luckily my dad’s job gives us an easy out.

<Them> Hello, would you like to hear about the Book of Mormon?
<Pi’s Dad> I’m a Protestant vicar, actually.

Gone, biznatches.

See, there’s a difference between making a law stating families can’t choose whether or not their kids should get a blood transfusion (something even then I’d be against) and declaring a whole religion illegal. Now, you’ll just have Jehovah’s Witnesses practicing in secrecy for fear of government reprisal. Plus, as I already pointed out, the Jehovah’s Witnesses are making steps towards allowing blood transfusions. It just seems it has to occur in increments. And even then, not allowing blood transfusions doesn’t fit under the “inciting hatred or intolerant behaviour” that the Guardian implies is a vital part of the law.

Now, Let’s take your Roman Catholics. Sure there was some child molestation by lmen of the cloth, but it would be an inappropriate action for Congress to go and declare Roman Catholicism an illegal religion. Instead, it should be the authorities’ place to go after and prosecute the priests. But, even then, your analogy wouldn’t hold up since the Roman Catholic Church has never stated that child molestation was moral and scriptural. I’ve never heard any Bishop come out and state that Leviticus 59:43 says “And ye shall take unto your bosom a small boy and ye shall play with his dingleberries.”

I agree completely, however if there were a religion that advocated that we go play with small boys’ dingleberries, I don’t think it should be legal because you’re preaching something destructive, which is what a lot of religious people do. If its part of the religion that certain things be done then it is preached, we need to step in and that’s what I’m debating. And the thing about JWs is a lot more than just blood transfusions.

what else?

Medical interventions in general, they condone rape and excommunicate women that speak out about that.

As I said before, if you want more info as to how destructive this can be, ask Rast. He’s seen and been through really fucked up shit.
