I hate rap and probably always will, but

I’m looking to increase my scope of music a bit in that direction. Recommend me some rap songs that are either very good or were big landmark songs that define the core of the genre. No obscure shit for now please. I only want hits or very very good songs. I don’t care from what era. Just throw stuff at me.

Do yourself a favour and don’t bother

Yeah see, I made this thread with the full understanding that this is going to be a very painful experiment. I’m not backing out :open_mouth:

Plumber’s Rap - Super Mario Brothers Super Show
Ninja Rap - Vanilla Ice
Pokerap - Pokemon

Only things worth listening to.

“The Message” - Grandmaster Flash

Ice Ice Baby is certainly a most emblematic masterpiece of the genre, I strongly suggest you start with it.

Actually, whatever you do, Hades, DON’T listen to Vanilla Ice. Everything he has ever done in any field of music (he tried to get a metal career off later) has turned into utter garbage. Utter garbage. He’s also a plagiarist.

If you want cheesy/schlock rap I’d go with MC Hammer. Yeah, not much better, but at least he didn’t plagiarize.

Ghost Ride It - Mistah Fab

Skankin Garbage - Fellatio Rap

California Love, when it came out, was a huge deal.

Lose Yourself - Eminem
X Gon’ Give It to Ya - DMX

I like Eminem’s later music, beginning with “Lose Yourself”. His serious songs.

Also try “Jesus Walks” by Kanye West.

Eminem - When I’m Gone
Eminem - Kill You
Eminem - Mockingbird
Eminem - Without Me

Eminem is the only rapper I like :stuck_out_tongue:

bring the noise - anthrax & public enemy

it’s tricky - run dmc

wasn’t me by shaggy is always entertaining

gym class heroes - cupid’s chokehold

fall out boy and gym class heroes have a mash up…im not sure what it’s called though

those are the only ones i ever listen to

What about that dusty old song about the buttox?

Edit: Baby Got Back by Sir Mix-a-lot

C.R.E.A.M. by the Wu-Tang Clan

N.W.A.

Their impact/influence in terms of lyrical content, “image”, owning/operating their own label, and so on can’t be overstated.

Being familiar with them as a group and the members’ respective solo careers will help to understand why so many acts since have sounded/looked the way they have.

I generally tend to stay far far away from rap. The only Rap type song I’ve heard and liked would be ‘Remember the Name’ by Fort Minor…so there you go.

The Pharcyde - Passin’ Me By

I can’t help with this one, but let me know when your loins start burning for polka.

One I forgot was Mosh by Eminem also.
