Next Thursday, I am going to the opera for the first time in my life. The opera which I shall be seeing is La Bohème; a tragedy (I love tragedy).
If anyone who has gone to the opera beforehand has any advice for a novice such as myself, by all means enlighten me. I am also concerned about how I should dress. Although I have always regarded the opera as a very formal event, rumour has it that today opera-goers dress less formally; however, since I love to dress up, I shall probably anyhow.

Anyone else see the humor in this?
Any way Perc The closest I’ve been to an opera was seeing Les Miserab, and dress semiformal, like what you were wearing in the “vampire” pic. Other than that I don’t have too much advice.
I certainly will post my comments on it. I am actually going to the final dress rehearsal; not the real thing (too expensive for me), but the final dress rehearsal should be good nonetheless.
I already know the story of La Bohème and I have actually seen a scene of it in the film Moonstruck, when the two main characters go to the opera in New York.
Call me an uncultured moron, but I actually haven’t heard of that opera…maybe it’s cause I’m permanently attatched to the computer? Hmm…please do tell us how it goes.
My advice? Keep your sword handy lest a giant purple octopus attempt to sabotage the performance.
Seriously, I would imagine formal attire would be the rule of the day. Respectable sportcoat and slacks for sure. A tie might not be necessary, but I doubt it would hurt.
