How long does it take you to put something together?
A lot of the poetry/songs/flows that I post here I find myself getting together and completed within 10-15 minutes, and a lot of the prose that I write takes anywhere from 30-45 minutes. Usually not more than this.
Fiction/Fanfiction ideas: About five mins. Ten for one that would work. I have too many ideas in my head. 0_o After that it’ll take about an our or two to write 'em. I write long.
I haven’t posted any here, but my poetry tends to require some sort of inspiration. Once I have that I can write it in about 20-30 minutes.
For my story, a couple hours per chapter. Of course, I write as I go, tending not to make an outline. Plus I listen to music while I write occasionally and sometimes get drawn into the song I’m currently listening to. And that’s just for an initial draft. The amount of time it takes to write depends on individual style.
I tend to…not write poetry, I don’t want to scar anyone for life.
Fiction/Fanfiction stuff: Awhile. Days. Months. Years. I like to think about how exactly I am going to present my material and the timing and flow has to be perfect. I usually write no more than a few pages to a novel or fanfiction at a time because I don’t want to get bored or stray from the original idea. Just a personal nitpicky habit of mine.
I don’t tend to write fanfiction much anymore, but I do still write, mostly just short stories, and on average, including all the thinking I have to do for what I want the story to be about, I’d stay I take about 45 minutes to an hour per page on any sort of creative work I do. That’s for more polished work, by the way - for really rough, soulshit (what I call the stuff that I don’t spend any time thinking about - it doesn’t mean it’s bad, it just means it’s not all that elegant or calculated) work, I tend to spend like half an hour per page. I haven’t written poetry in awhile, but when I do write it, it takes a long time, because word choice is key, so I have to try different mixtures out forever.
Well, when I get ideas it goes very quickly, often when I see something. Like in Legend of Dragoon when a captured king is sitting on a heap of skulls “swearing” at his warden, I got the mental image of Edgar being crucified, which led onwards to Alternate Fates, the spinoff of my old FF6 trilogy. Then the outline of the story can take weeks, months.
Oh, and whenever I have to write poetry or a story or whatever for class or something it usually takes me about an hour, since I can never decide on what to write.
Poetry takes me two minutes if I want to write it well.
Fanfiction ideas come to me at random. Writing the fanfiction, however, takes me forever. I’m the person that writes three paragraphs in fifteen minutes and then takes a two hour break. -_-’ I try.
It’s hard to tell for me because I usually work on about 400 different things at the same time… short, humourous stuff takes me a short amount of time, each round of FF weakest link took about 40 minutes (but a good deal of that was thinking up questions). By comparison, Retribution (which was my sole project all throughout it’s creation) took me ages to write- nigh on two months.
I guess it just boils down to “it takes me less time if it’s shorter than the stuff that takes longer. Which is longer” :get it?:
Hard to say, really. Getting the ideas isn’t what’s hard… it’s getting the mental image out in words. And I’m bad at that. Not much better at translating a mental picture into an actual picture, either…
