Hurrah. It’s great to know that the earth isn’t as entierly unique as some would like to think, not because that in itself is great - which it is -, but because it means we might just have somewhere to go by the time we’ve managed to fuck this place up beyond the point of no return.
Besides the color, and the logic, there was also a probe designed to catch hydrogen signals in some other different way in another article. I lost the link, though, and I’m not sure which method it used. I think spectography would also tell whether that was water.
Now, ice on Mars, in the way and amount they found it, don’t lead many to think there is life on Mars today. But it greatly strengthens the hypotehsis of life having existed in Mars in some distant past.
I heard a theory a while ago from one of my Science teachers… Chemistry, I think it was.
He said that there was the thought that Mars was possibly somewhat like Earth, although burnt out, and that life such as what we have here (possibly not human) was most probable to have lived on Mars.
Would I be right in saying that??

Everyone was bashing him for something when he made his first posts. I find sidewise references to him saying that gays were evil or something, but I can’t find any posts to that effect. All I’ve got is references that sound very much like admissions.

Somewhere, somewhen, a lot of people took to disliking NMG, just as they did Dragonquester, Dark, and a bunch of other people whose names I don’t even remember any more.
I agree though, that he largely doesn’t deserve it. He’s improved a great deal in getting along here, and while he doesn’t add to the conversation like the mods and old hands do, he’s not dragging things down.
I personally have only ignored one or two people (the communism fanboys spring to mind). The problem is that with so many people ribbing on guys like NMG, you miss the context if you ignore him, and then you start thinking that you missed something funny, and you go and click “View Post” over and over again. It’s sort of like having your own personal, more inside-joke-ey bash.org, in some ways.

You can see an example of this right on the first page of this thread. They were not disagreeing with you because they hate you, they (us) were disagreeing with you because your facts were not correct. Your facts were wrong, granted some could have been less rude about it, but you should not need to feel under attack simply because someone points out a mistake. We all make mistakes, it’s common and flipping abut it and stubbornly trying to stand your ground on something so obviously verifiable only makes you seem hardheaded.

“We are but what others perceive us to be” I’d like to remember where I got that from.
What I mean here is that people’s opinions don’t just reset when you log off. The people you talk with create their own vision of your self based on what you say here, in other words, your past is the only image of “you” that they can use to identify you in the present.
In less complicated terms: Continuously hanging on to something someone said is bad, because we all say stupid shit occasionally, but expecting everyone to just “let go of the past” is not reasonable. People are still going to identify you by what you say until you show any sign of change, so don’t just expect everyone to ignore and forget if something you say insults them.

It is certainly a good advice, I myself should learn to do that, but you are not giving a good example either. You reply to people’s insults just the same they do to yours. Don’t you think that is a bit hypocritical?
People are going to disagree with you. This is neither speculation nor prediction, it is history. Believing that someone will change his/her beliefs because of what someone says is unrealistic, but believing that one’s own beliefs are the universal dogmatic truth is just as unrealistic. Superficial and objective discussions between different points of view are very much possible without starting a flamewar, I could point you to a recent thread starring one of our most radical anti-creationists and a religious believer discussing the points of each view, neither one changing their mind but not escalating into a fight either. Do not feel threatened when someone points out a discrepancy on your line of thinking, it will happen no matter where you are. Quoting and paraphrasing someone (Eva I think) “You are not needed to believe them, you are not needed to accept them, just learn to respect their existence”.

I honestly think you don’t deserve that. I’m pointing out to Hiryuu that you’ve either made some enemies or that some people don’t understand you or find you off-putting, and take the opportunity to attack you when you express an opinion, particularly when you simply state without citing evidence. Some people here don’t like statements that are too general (I should know).

That might work in a perfect world, but a better strategy for survival and social interaction is to take care what views you express, so as to avoid unnecessary trouble. It’s often better, to paraphrase Einstein, “to remain silent and be thought a fool than open my mouth and remove all doubt.” Never underestimate the power of deviation from the norm to provoke attack.

I haven’t made any personal attacks on you in my post. I haven’t constantly made you the butt of rude and/or nonsensical jokes. I’ve cited earlier posts of yours as an explanation to Hiryuu as to why you’re treated the way you are, and why people don’t, as he and you suggested .
