Since Gil is the currency in most FF games, do they just use coins or tender/cash as well?
If they use cash, I wonder what the gills (bills) look like, like what would be on the $1, $5, $10, $20, $50, $100, ect. Or what would the head/tail of a golden dollar look like?
Would it just have that G, like on the Auctioner in FF9?
Or would they have world leaders, bosses, or summons on them?
I generally do not overthink video-game logic, but I have always imagined gil to be gold coins, since in older Final Fantasy games, ‘gil’ was rendered ‘G’ (for gold) in the English translations. The word ‘gil’ also reminds me of an older English word, ‘gild’ or ‘geld’, which means ‘money’, and which is etymologically related to our word ‘gold’.
I always imagined that Gil consisted of silver coins, but that’s what I normally assume all RPG currency looks like unless it has a name like “Gold Pieces”.
One thing that gets on my nerves about SO3 is the fact that despite the fact that you go to two different planets, they use the same currency. Then there’s the fact that they describe a sword as being Japanese on a planet that doesn’t even have the country on it.
Well considering that the main character is actually from Earth, where there is a Japan, or so I’ve been told. And the fact that the weapon describition are sort of from his point of view. It is understandable that the game can call a weapon Japanese.
As for the money thing, I don’t know how you’d explain that. But really who cares!! It is just a game after all.
I seen to remember a game where the monsters were actually made of money, so when they died, they reverted back to it. Most of the time, though, I really don’t care what the logic is, just that there is SOME reason.
