GIF is Pubic Domain

Well, it finally happened: Clicka

1- That’s an interesting typo
2- I don’t get what the big deal is.

Heheheh, pubic. Anyways, this is better. The next version of the GImp will be able to save as GIFs.

i say he did that typo on purpose…

I don’t get it. So, because a patent expired, they may charge whomever uses gif’s?

i hope not, else those sprite requests i made would be for nothing…

<img src=“http://www.rpgclassics.com/staff/tenchimaru/td.gif”> No, they could charge you before, since some company had the patent to .gif. Now it’s public domain, so it’s free to use.

wait…i can now abuse .gifs all i want, then?

It used to be that software writers had to buy a licence to allow users to save as GIF format. Now it’s a freebee.

Yahoo! R0x0rs! Now we won’t have to change everything on our site to PNGs. 8p

and i can keep all the sprites i saved just for these boards!

Meh, I’ve done worse typos…

like what, exactly?

I don’t know exactly, but I know I have. It’s not like I’d remember every typo I’ve made.

oh…thought you’d remember the best ones…

I would be the smartest man alive if I could remember all my typos

Well… if Compuserve sued us we would… 8p

Who cares? GIF is ancient and PNG owns GIF any day. The only thing PNG can’t handle are animations AFAIK. Everything else PNG got full support for, and most important of all BETTER support than GIFs. GIF only got binary transparency, has suckier compression rates and can only support 256 colors/GIF.

Now PNG on the other hand… Alpha transperencies, 65535 colors, same if not smaller file sizes, and things like that are all reasons why I love it.

Now if only crappy IE would start giving native support to PNG…

WooH!
I hope this means the programs which have suffered under that patent gets cheaper: Of course, probably not.
