Schools in Wisconsin trying to teach creationism, 300 teachers protest, following 43 universities’ deans.

It’s worse in Texas; governer just made all textbooks change marriage description from ‘between two people’ to ‘between a man and a woman’. And as for yours;

It Begins.

I don’t see the harm in teaching other theories, but I realize that is the term they are using to make it sound better. I don’t agree with it being taught in science or history class, merely glossed over, and plus, there are various theories of creationist origins. Talk about having a superiority complex.

But biology? Where do origin theories belong in biology class? Like i said, I understand it to be brought up in science and history (as it was in my school) as a possibility and to make students understand that not everyone believes in evolution, but come on. Biology?

Creationism is for bible studies if people want to learn it. It doesn’t belong in biology as it has 0 scientific credence, unlike evolutionary theory which is integral to understanding all forms of biology whether its molecular or on a bigger scale.

Ugh. We had to read an article about creationism. It’s fucking retarded. As Sinistral said, they can learn that shit in church.

Looks like ramza says evertying I wanna say today :P.

But yeah, If this spreads, they will prolly go to court about it like last time.

I have little faith in my homestate anymore…

Oi. As said, it can be kept in chuch. “Creation science” and “Intelligent design” is only a mask to push the “God created us” view on others. IF they want to believe that, fine, but there’s no evidence of it, and it’s really based off of faith instead of fact.

Brushing over it real quick is the best way to include it in biology(when learning about the theories of how life began). I know it only took about a sentance of my notes, and the teacher included it to show the different theories people have on how life began. As long as that doesn’t take an entire day of learning, there’s nothing really wrong with including it in a lecture or in the curriculum.

Edit: 1000th post. Yae!

It is wrong to include because biology is a science. It means that it presents information which was tested and has been strongly supported to be true. Molecular biology (DNA etc), cellular biology, ecology and evolution fit this criteria. Creationism doesn’t belong because people like to think its right because they have religious biases in regards to other stuff which they don’t want taught. It would belong if it had any scientific support, which it doesn’t. As SS said, its just something people have done to try to get God in the classroom.

We had a similar discussion once, I think I’ll start copy pasting my and SK’s arguments soon.

One would suggest comprimise by putting for the fact that God could and would use evolution to develop the earth and life on it, but the problem with compromise between extremists is that noone’s happy, and it all just starts up again.

Lame and a half. >:O

ignorant people assume that when scientists and other informed people talk about scientific “theories” that “theory” has a completely different scientific connotation than it does in every day use. that seems to be the root of this school boards decision. or atleast their press release. natl geographic had a nice feature on the subject recently.

Arghllbhblhlbllblblllll. The world just isn’t getting any smarter.

I just read the Nat’l Geographic article you mean (I think). Didn’t it say something along the lines of how evolution is a theory the same way that Earth orbits the sun is a theory, relativity is a theory, atomic theory is a theory, and electricity is a theory?

The collective IQ of the world remains a constant, no matter the population, and earth’s population ain’t getting no smaller.

and to make students understand that not everyone believes in evolution
Wait, waiiiit holdonaminute. You can’t just NOT believe in evolution. You either believe in both evolution and creationism or you believe in just evolution. There is no not-believing-in-evolution. It’s just too fucking supported by PHYSICAL EVIDENCE. It’s like denying the existance of oneself, you just can’t do it and be correct anymore. EVERYTHING, from the nature of mitochondria, to the mutation of the x chromosome, to genetics itself, to bacteria adapting immunities to anti-biotics, to the dozens of hominid fossils illustrating a gradual path toward homo sapein sapiens, supports evolution.

And Star, I believe in Intelligent design, thoroughly. It is NOT merely a cop-out to protect the beliefs of certain judeo-christian religions. Fundamental creationism is a load of shit, but I’ve simply experienced too many “coincidences” to not believe in God’s plan.

There are a fucking LOT of variables out there in the universe (fundamental constants) that with only a slightly altered value, like the force of gravity, would make it impossible for any form of life to exist. Like atoms not sticking together and all that stuff. There’s so much of that shit out there with exactly the needed values that it can be a bit hard to believe that it’s all a coincidence. I think that’s what intelligent design is about.

I don’t buy it myself, though.

Well, thats the theory anyway. In a lot of their supposed cases however, it can be shown that its like saying if the temperature at which sticks burn is higher, they wouldnt burn, since the fire of a stick is only the older lower temperature :stuck_out_tongue:

You cant take the laws DERIVED from the aformentioned constants and expect rational results. These are behaviours are effects and only rarely causes.
