Final Fantasy XI

<img src=“http://www.rpgclassics.com/staff/tenchimaru/td.gif”> How are stats calculated between jobs? As in, do your stats improve in a way if you have so and so as a subclass which has that and this boosting, etc…

As far as I’ve heard, subclasses can’t level up at all. You must make it your primary job to level it up.

Stats boost seemingly randomly in battle. When you’re fighting a strong enemy, your sword skill might go up 0.2 points. When it gets up a full point, it lets you know by saying “Sword Skill has reached level 3” or whatever. Because I’m a Red Mage, and they start with the spell Dia (lowers defense slightly, and slowly decreases HP over time), my “Enfeebling” magic is up to lv 23 or something ludicrous like that (of course, I’ve also been using a lot of Bind, Paralyze, Poison, and Blind).

BTW, I’ve heard something new as far as pricing goes; apparently, the PlayOnline service will be free for PC players, but will cost something per month for PS2 players. I assume this is because it will be the only way available to check e-mail and IM people on PS2.

On a really odd note, I got a copy of the Beta seemingly out of the blue. No E-Mail, letter, phone call nothing. Not that I’m complaining or anything. =P

Anyway, I’m still only a level 3 Tarutaru Black Mage, as I just played for a short while today, but if you want to group up some time Mr. Sat, I’d really perfer it over a group with some random person on the game.

Is there a level 99 cap or do you gain level fast for infinity?

I’ve played a game liek that…

Actually since I’m posting here anyway, I do have some coments on the game, first at low levels the battle system is a bit monotonous. I can really see some promise for it once you get to higher levels, though. I’ll try to elaborate on what Mr. Saturn already wrote. Basically, like Mr. Saturn said, there are MOBs that roam the wilderness. A majority of them are passive and won’t attack unless antagonized, but there are some agressive enemies to watch out for. You can enter combat with a non-agressive enemy by either attacking them with a physical attack or damaging magic. Red Magic status effects don’t cause enemies to attack, but Black Magic sure does as I painfully found out. =P

Once you’ve entered combat, your view locks onto the enemy and can’t be moved, which becomes annoying when a camera error forces your view into the ground and you can’t see what you’re aiming at. Every type of attack has an invisible “range”. Magic has a long range, for example, while swords have a short range. You can run around anywhere on the current map and issue commands, so you’re not just limited to a set “battle field”. Another mildly annoying thing I’ve noticed is that if you’re in an enemy’s attack range when they initiate an attack, even if you move out of the attack animation, the attack still hits you. Only your “evasion” skill allows you to dodge attacks, no skill on your part.

The game’s interface itself is baffling at first, until I realized that the main menu is accessed with the “-” on the numpad instead of the “esc” key. Once you’ve gotten that figured out, you can customize the controls to a more American standard and the interface is much easier to use.

The “PlayOnline Interface” is very well done with quite a few useful features, and the only complaint I have is that it takes too long to get through all the menus into the actual game, or out of the game through all the menus. They should cut out the middle and let me get straight into or out of the action.

The graphics for the game, while not groundbreaking for computer graphics, are still very beautiful. The problem I have with FFXI’s graphics is that they’re very, very, very repititious. All the same 15 colors just seem to be used far too often, and there’s a lack of truely inspired achitechture or scenery.

The music’s quality sounds professional, but the actual melodies are quite annoying, to me at least. Hell, the famous “Final Fantasy” arpeggio is bastardized in this game and damn do they let you know it by playing the same 20 second loop during the 1 hour + download times it takes to patch this game.

Now onto the things I do like. This is an MMORPG very close to the style of traditional MUDs or Text based RPGs. Even some of the commands are the same. I like that, and I like it a lot, it’s nostalgia in a good way. And once you’ve fixed the interface’s commands, the interface is actually very sleek and easy to use.

The skills work in this game work the same as in the Secret of Mana or the Secret of Evermore, where the more you use a skill, the better is becomes, and for me at least, it seemed that every time I used a skill, it improved a little bit. I like this style of improvement, so I’m impressed there.

The party system is nice and easy to use, and an interesting system is in place to fairly distribute items. When an enemy drops an item, you can play “lots” on that item. Basically, everyone who wants the item gets a random number from 1 - 999, the person with the highest number gets the item. If you don’t like that method, you can assign a party “quartermaster” to assign the items to individual party members. Very nice system, I think. The only problem at all that I have with the party system is that the game doesn’t keep track of your party members on any maps, so it’s easy to lose them if they get out of your visual range and compass range.

So far this game has been pretty good, but I’m expecting it to really pick up once I’ve gotten to higher levels

You can place markers of your party members and it will follow them on the map.

Anyway, what’s your u-id (number on the top left on the POL main screen)? Mine’s 00-654057. Go ahead and search for me and add me to your friend list. Make sure your profile public so that I can add you to mine, too.

What town did you start in, also? I’m in Bastok, so if you’re in Windurst or San D’Oria, it’ll be some time before I find you. Though I am planning a trip to Windurst pretty soon.

The game is MUCH easier on a Gamepad. I’m using a PS2 controller hooked to my PC via USB (try www.ztnetstore.com). I personally like the music (I think it’s just as good as any other FF game lately), and though the graphics do seem a bit bland by a PC standard, remember that this is downported from PS2, and it’s been on PS2 in Japan for 2 years now. Considering that, I think it’s pretty spectacular looking. Though, I agree, it is pretty bland compared to your average PC game.

Level cap in the original game is 50 as I’ve read it, 70 in the expansion. Since the US version is coming bundled with the exp (and the beta has the exp built in too, I saw a summoner today), the level cap in the US version is 70.

Mr. Saturn is that your name in FFXI?
