I’ve been a Final Fantasy fan since the Super NES release of Final Fantasy 3(6j). Since then I have beaten Final Fantasy 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, Tactics, and Mystic Quest. The one game of the main series that I can’t get into really (that I own) is 8.
I’ve gotten only about 7 hours into Final Fantasy 8. It was honestly the 7 most boring hours of my life. Please tell that this game isn’t really that bad? I’ve really enjoyed nothing about the first 6 or 7 hours. I find the characters irritating and bland, I find the world boring; I just don’t like it.
Many people would say no. I would wager, though, that the people who liked the game also liked the first few hours of it. So if you haven’t liked it yet, chances are you won’t be having oodles of fun playing the rest of it either. Hades or Infonick might prove me wrong, though.
Well, stuff begins to blow up on Disc 2. Dunno if that counts. As you get farther in a lot of stuff happens, you get more freedom over the world, more skills and better magic, airship etc. Personally I find the first few hours of every FF boring, but that’s just me.
Well the first few hours of this one, are a bit boring. Since it has those long tutorials, that you don’t really need.
However after a while, you do get a lot of interesting stuff happening. Like assanation attempts, jail breaks, missile strikes and a load of other stuff. But really Locke, you need to be the judge for yourself, so continue playing.
See in most FF games, I love the early parts. It just feels fresh. I played through the first disc of FF9 in one night I loved it so much. Same with Final Fantasy 6. I couldn’t stop playing until I was done with the three scenarios, and had beat Kefka the first time. I love early parts of RPGs.
FF8 starts being likeable when you stop comparing it to other FFs. If you wanna play FF6, then play FF6. Don’t play FF8 expecting elements from FF6 to be in it. I’ll tell you right now, there are none.
Enjoy it for what it is. Don’t hate it for what it isn’t.
And to answer your question, yes, FF8 will eventually grow on you if you play it enough. Even things you hate passionately will become obsessions if you’re around them often enough.
If you were going to enjoy FFVIII, you probably would have by now. The characterization and storyline in the first disc rival those of <i>any</i> RPG. Then the characters lose their appeal, and the story changes from riveting to lackluster. Still, the game is worth finishing.
IMO; The first disc was the best for me. (Except when it came to Triple Triad)

The second “mission” was pretty neat too with the element of infiltration.
More big garden yawn afterwards. FH bore. OMG WE CHILDREN 2geth0r yawn.
But then… Garden vs Garden. orgasm
Disc 3? BIIIIIIIIIG YAWN until you’re in space then it spirals down again… only to be relieved just a bit by Laguna’s antics. He was the #2 highlight of the game.
But then… sigh

Time Kompression? WTF?
Ending Bonus: Zell chokes to his own damn hotdogs. Squall smiles. SKEEEEEERY. WTF… awww… eww…

Weapons: …coulda used a slight bit more work sinc ethe enemies level with you, changing item drop patterns, which was HELL -_-;

Quistis was great, Squall was okay, Zell was pretty good, SELPHIE DEVIL’S ADVOCATE (TRAIN SONG BOOYAKA YATTAA…) Irvine ok, Rinoa hmmm…
Its a pretty okay game. Its consitantly okay throughout the whole game, but its never outstanding or bad for that matter. My big gripe is that you recruited all the characters too fast.
i think ff8 is a great game.
especely on disk 3 when you get the ragnoric god that ship kicked ass.

I liked FF8, in comparison (which is silly lately, because there ISNT a comparison to the old games, jesus people…) FF8 is still good. By and large, there were infact some boring points, but for me it wasnt the begining, for me it was the train mission. But if there was a whole horrible game hidden somewhere in the discs of Final Fantasy VIII I’ve missed it. I loved Laguna’s story and he is a big reason that i liked this game…

Terra loses her memories sigh… Locke jumps down to the rescure big sarcastic surprise… Kefka shows up and tries to destroy Figaro yawn … South Figar was taken over in a military coup bore… Kefka poisons Doma Castle snooze… running around and stealing peoples clothes in SF… cool… manuvering a raft without ores bore…
Defending narshe from an attack… not too bad… Terra really being an esper zzz… Setzer wants to take a woman against her will… shrugs you sneak into Vector yawn…
Espers commit mass-suicide so you can learn their powers, very cool !
You set Espers loose ont he world and they kick everyones asses bore
Kefka unbalances the godess statues and changes the face of the world sleep
And that was only the first half of the game.
