FFTA and FFT (PSX)

Same game? or different?

Different I guess. Someone will elaborate better than I can…

Different, yup, but the basic idea still remains, with noticeable changes from the original game to the engine.

FTA is based around the same concepts as the first game, but there are a LOT of changes. Since they did have to make a whole new engine for the GBA, you can probably expect lots of graphical changes as far as sprites and spell effects go. Also, I heard that they significantly changed some of the classes… I’d check out GameFAQS if you really want to see the differences.

I’m actually found rpgclassic.com off a gamefaqs.com link. Most users at the FFTA Board don’t know much about that game yet either.

The FFTA English rom is out (But read the rules, you can’t request it). It’s FFT’s engine, expanded upon. There’s a law system, that on certain days, in certain areas, certain types of spells and weapons and items aren’t allowed. Certain species of units can have certain jobs. For instance, humans can have Fighter, Thief, White/Black Mage, and one other (I forget). Whereas, a Banga, can be a monk (I forget his other one). You build the world as you need new areas on it; you drop them onto slots and connect them. The main character’s sprite REALLY looks like Ramza though.

Yeah, I keep calling him Ramza in my head. 8p

Anyway… there are certainly significant gameplay changes. You don’t play the game AT ALL the same (strategies are completely different). For one thing, learning abilities is via AP. AP is gained after each battle rather than after each action. And you can only learn abilities from equipped items, similar to FF9 (and like FF9, you can use any ability of an item you have equipped whether you’ve learned it yet or not). The Propositions from FFT are far more prevalent here, too (in fact, they make up most of the game).

The first ten hours I found to be incredibly easy compared to FFT, but after that the challenging battles started. :sunglasses: One thing that threw me off guard was the fact that you have the maxed-out shop inventory just a few hours after you start the game. You can’t afford most of it at that point, of course, but it’s a bit overwhelming. O_o Anyhoo… so far, very nice. A lot lighter than FFT (and without the big storyline).

It does look and sound cool. I am thinking about buy a gameboy sp just for that reason. Or i will download the rom. Maybe not that is illeagal isnt?

Different games.

And yes, downloading the rom is illegal.

Available for purchase in my area tommorrow.

Oh yeah…

downloading the rom is not only illegal but it leads to the industry making shittier games.

my reasoning for this is:

  1. companies cannot determine the amount of roms downloaded from the internet.
  2. when people download roms, especially roms released before the game is on store shelves, that usually precludes them from purchasing the actual game.
  3. lots of little kids buy shitty games because they are conditioned to enjoy crap and dont know about roms/etc
  4. therefore, companies see that shitty games are selling absurds amounts of units while more sophisticated people arent using their vote in the democracy of capitalism (or socialism if youre nulani).

so thats my skewed version of economics.

That makes so much sense that If I had money I’d actually buy the game. It really comes down to money for me. What I can and can’t afford.
