No, I’d agree with it. They’re just magic casters who are fodder for the main hero to fall in love with.
Everything can be deconstructed if you like. Lord of the Rings is a story about a bunch of pointy-eared midgets throwing a ring into a volcano. Ulysses is this guy on a boat with bad luck. The fact is that many of these characters have facets and histories that are fairly intriguing.
Not so DR, I think that FF XIII is really going to disprove that because the main hero seems to be the female character shown. Also from the weapon she wields I’d doubt she would be classified as a ‘caster’. From the demeanor she seem to have in the images I’ve seen she doesn’t really seem to be the normal female lead.
