Emulator (not ROM) help needed

I’m trying to replay Breath of Fire 3, which I own a copy of, but with cheats. I have a personal philosophy of not replaying a game unless I can do it differently, you see (that’s why I play the heck out of it the first time.) Trouble is, my PSone is d-e-a-d and my PS1 gameshark won’t work on the PS2. Then I thought about downloading a PSX emulator and playing the game on my PC, using codes found online.

After trying several Emus (and running into all kind of problems trying to get them to work, I won’t bore you with the details) I finally got two to work; AdriPSX, an older one that works perfectly- however, I can’t seem to find any BoF cheats or codes for it. I found out about something called PEC that was supposed to work with any emulator, so I downloaded it, but I can’t figure how to get Adri to work with it. The other Emu I got was ePSXe, which I hear is the best, but it won’t work properly (which baffles me since obviously my PC has the right requirements or Adri would not have worked). I know that PEC works with ePSXe because I read about it, but when I try to use it I either get a “wgl missing” message or it works, but without cheats. I KNOW I’m doing something wrong, but what? (and yes, I know I had to download the correct BIOS and plugins in the right folders, but no matter how I do it, I don’t get results.) This is VERY frustrating because I come so close to getting what I want. Help please!

ePSXe is awful. I tried getting it to play LoM and it’s ridiculously slow even on minimum settings, and I have no idea why. It’s just a badly engineered piece of software. I’m using something called PsxFIN, I think, which works perfectly.

I don’t know anything about PEC because playing games on my own terms is pointless to me, but I’d recommend not using ePSXe if you can avoid it. It’s a very thrown-together application and won’t be good for anything until a more finished version of it is out.

Update: after much monkeying around (wow, even I am surprised at how stubborn I can be) I finally got PEC to work with AdriPSX. But the game would freeze during battle, so I settled for giving my characters 20 of every item in the game (spares me from having to fish all those rare fish) and continued playing the game by itself. Still makes for an interesting playthrough; I’m planning on killing Balio and Sunder (on the SECOND fight; I know you can’t win the first, that was just a rumor) perhaps blowing them up with explosives.

Should I play BoF3? It sounds intriguing

No. I liked it, but it’s about as standard generic RPG as you get, there’s no particular outstanding quality. It’s okay if you just want a game to play though.

I have to disagree with Seraphim. While there’s nothing truly outstanding about the game, it IS pretty good for its type. Sure, there’s some nostalgia on my part since it was the third RPG I ever played, but I still consider it a pretty good game all around- animation, music, gameplay, etc. I like it better than many later gen games. And it gets surprisingly dark in spots- in fact, facing the consequences of your acts (such as killing your foes) seems to be a major theme. You don’t see that in your standard RPGs.

Update: I’m having a lot of fun with the cheats I’m using, such as killing bosses with items I wouldn’t get until later. And would you believe I never though to use healing to kill the ghost bosses? Probably because you’re still low-level at the time and you tend to save your healing spells to cure the party. Now that I have a zillion AP-restore items, I can cut loose with such attacks. :stuck_out_tongue:

Oh, I was also able to enter the Fairy World, which you aren’t supposed to until mid-game… I was afraid it was going to make the game crash, but it worked- there wasn’t anybody there yet, however.

Really looking forth to kicking Balio and Sunder’s tails, I hated the way the game made me wait so long to beat those creeps the first time around (of course beating them in the second fight won’t change the story, I’m doing it for the satisfaction.)

(Mispost. Ignore/delete this, please.)
