Eh, I disagree with the Mega Man slide regression argument. Sure, it was a mechanic that was removed, but it’s not needed in 9 since none of the stages or enemies are designed around having it.
Besides, it IS there. You just have to play as Proto Man. It’s useful in one or two cases, but it’s not a game breaker to lose it.
Regression isn’t necessarily a bad thing, either. Besides, the game was still fun to play. That’s all that really matters. The stage design was great, and the special weapons actually mattered, and that was something most of the Mega Man games post-3 were lacking. Considering Mega Man 7 and 8 (and MM&B) were slow and clunky, and full of gimmicks, a regression in the gameplay was actually a step up. Maybe it was too far for you, but the loss of the slide really didn’t bother me.
Back on topic, Dragon Quest V is one of the few RPGs I can think of where you follow a single character through his or her life. You even have kids, and your kids actually turn out to be the prophesied heroes. Not your character, his kids. That was a real nice surprise. The game also introduced a monster-catching element before Pokemon was released. Yeah that’s right. Dragon Quest Monsters didn’t steal it, it was just taking it back.
Also, the final boss is Piccolo. Or rather, since Toriyama does the character designs he just really looks like Piccolo, more than any other Dragon Quest monster has. His first form, anyway.
