Dead Fantasy 3, 4, 5.

Trailers for them have been out for over a week. Or, at least, just like for Dead Fantasy 2, someone recorded footage of them being shown on a big screen at a con. So if you’re interested, a quick search will yield about 3-4 minutes each of the next three installments of the series.

And for those new to it:

Dead Fantasy is a series of ridiculously well-done CG movies featuring characters from the FF and DoA games having it out in completely over-the-top battles. The guy who does them (the ONE GUY who does pretty much everything) showed up on radar when he put together video called Haloid a few years ago that featured Samus duking it out with a Spartan (from the Halo series) in the midst of a Covenant attack on Earth. It was good. Real good. Graphics looked X-Box/GC-era because they used a lot of models run on that hardware. I think the guy makes the models now.

Dead Fantasy came out looking MUCH more advanced, and had FFX-2 versions of Yuna and Rikku fighting 2 to three characters from the DoA series.

Dead Fantasy 2 brought in a couple more characters from each world and contained action choreographed at such a high level that it’s simply stunning that one guy could put together the videos at all.

The mind-blowing aspect of these things is that the creator, Monty Oum by his DeviantArt (where updates get posted) is routinely putting out material that puts things like Square’s efforts in Advent Children to shame. There’s less background and landscape, sure, but smoothly-animated fast-paced action like you see in Oum’s stuff just doesn’t make it into most productions.

For a sense of scale, take the segment with Tifa in the church in Advent Children, double its speed and make it seven times as long. With sometimes as many as 20 characters on screen at the same time, though usually fewer. Mind-blowing.

One of 3, 4, or 5 has a decent amount of blood in it, but otherwise the series hasn’t had any at all, despite the fact that the entire purpose of the series is violence. Just an FYI.

So that’s it. These are things I enjoyed, and at least some of the people here will too. I think the official home of the streaming videos is at gametrailers.net or something. I’d check, but I’m on a modem at the moment. I eagerly invite anyone interested to go watch the videos and let out a bit of mad laughter once the pace and scale of the action sets in.

Aren’t the full-length ones supposed to be premiered at Anime Expo?

Ummm…

That said, I have noticed more footage since they first debuted (and in better quality no less), but I suspect that we wont get the Full Monty as it were until Anime Expo like Vicki said.

Waiting with bated breath. Still haven’t seen the trailers, as I don’t want to spoil myself till I get to see them in HD goodness.

Btw, Oum apparently works as a professional game developer, though I’m not sure what company.
