Computer Problems

Ok, my computer keeps on restarting itself for no apparent reason, and the most inconvenient times ( when I am playing games)

I already did virus scan, and removed all spyware. I use Windows XP.

Can anyone help?

I don’t want to reformat my pc.

Have you run a Scandisk and defragged recently?

Yeah, I tried everything, and all of them say that there is nothing wrong

Thats your suggestion for EVERYTHING. “Hey my hard drive, it’s like melting and there’s a huge hole in my comp and desk…and floor, so uh what should I do”
BX"SCANDISK AND DEFRAG :D~~~~~~~~~"

Uh this is where XP sucks teh balls with no BSOD. Obviously you’re getting an error somewhere if you aint got a virus or something. Where is DS? HE MUST HELP THEE.

I’ll turn on the DS signal!

I love you, so very much.

Brownouts?
Undervoltage?

It’s probably your RAM wearing out. Download the program from the link provided and run it to check your RAM.

Oh, yeah, this happened to a friend of mine, too. I think you’ll have to reinstall XP, unfortunately.

Someone call me? Sorry, but I didn’t check the boards last night on acount of the elections.

As Green Mage alredy mentioned, since your problem seems limited to when you play games, it sounds like a textbook case of dying RAM. However, the problem with dying RAM is that it tends to pass a memory test even if it’s fried (both my chips were fried and they passed a deep scan with flying colors).

But before we make any clear diagnostic, first lets try to see if we call get a little more info on your problem. Do the followimg:

Start -> Control Panel
Select System
Go to the Advanced tab and click the settings button next to statup and recovery.
Under system failure, there’s an option labeled Autimatically Restart, uncheck it.

Unchecking this option will prevent your system from automatically rebooting. Instead, you’ll just crash and get a blue screen of death.

Now, play around with your PC normally until it crashes and pay attention to the error message. If you get an error message saying something about a memory dump, then your RAM is almost certainly bad and you’ll want to take your PC into the shop ASAP. If not, I’ll think of something else.

Excuse me, but Scandisk and Defragging are very important steps that many people forget to do on a regular basis. Given that most people here actually know how to maintain computers, I can understnand if you feel it’s a stupid suggestion. However, I’ve learned never to overestimate a perosn’s intelligence.

Sometimes it resets when I am not playing games, but I’ll try your method DS.

When you get it, does white text on a blue background scroll through veryvery fast? 'Cause I get that problem also.

Now you’ve got me curious. What does that mean anyway? Like, the connectors get bent or does it overheat and melt or something?

Nonono, Im not saying <strike>you’re  </strike>it’s stupid. I’m saying that it is really your suggestion for everything.

BSOD 2.74!!!(obviously I’m not trying to help with this post :D, just mock Pie)

That seems to be your modus operandi recently.

PCWorld.com - Busting the Biggest PC Myths
Terrible things happen if you turn off your PC without shutting down Windows.
We didn’t check disk fragmentation because some hard-drive experts told us that defragging today’s faster, bigger drives has little to no effect on performance.

Usually when RAM fries there’s nothing obviously wrong with it, more often then not, a very small section of the memory gets corrupted, it doesn’t take much but what happens is when ever your system tries to use that particular piece of memory, the system wil crash.

Not getting the problem solved won’t ruin your PC, but RAM isn’t prohibitively expensive and having your PC reboot on you is a serious annoyance, well worth the trouble of fixing.

That is exactly it!

Another question! Do your games also experience horrible, gut-wrenching slowdown before the crash occurs? If it does we have the same problem, so tell me how it gets fixed when it does plz. :frowning:

No, they just freeze and then that damn blue screen pops up

OK DS, help me please.

The blue screen popped up again, while I was burning a CD.

It said on the top:

Bugcode_USB_Driver

And then some stuff about windows shutting down to keep the pc safe, and on the bottom it said

BEGINNING DUMP OF PHYSICAL MEMORY
