Computer machine question

I am running windows xp. I’m trying to run Baldur’s Gate 1 but I’m having some problems running the setup file.
I always get this error message:
c:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose ‘Close’ to terminate the application.

So far I’ve tried:

  1. Running Program Compatibality Wizard to set it as windows 98 (the os it originaly ran in)
  2. Using a Dos emulator to run the setup file (DOSBox, I couldn’t quite get it to work however)
  3. Ice cubes

Any other ideas? This game is from 1998 for chrisakes and there should be a way to get it to work

Ice Cubes?

Too bad we don’t have some sort of tech support forum in which to post these threads.

Do you have Windows XP disc? If so, i think i can help you. If not, i don’t know what to say =\

Yes I have one, what can I do?

Sorry for the late response, i was at work, then my connection went dead. =(

Basically, you need to “reinstall” that system file. To do it, you need the CD, which is why i asked.

Put the CD in your CD drive, then open a command prompt (Start > Run > CMD if you don’t know how). Type this in at the prompt. Each is a separate command:

expand CD-ROM Drive Letter:\i386\config.nt_ c:\windows\system32\config.nt
expand CD-ROM Drive Letter:\i386\autoexec.nt_ c:\windows\system32\autoexec.nt
expand CD-ROM Drive Letter:\i386\command.co_ c:\windows\system32\command.com

(each is one line, begining with expand and ending with .whatever). Obviously, CD-ROM drive letter is wherever the CD is, like D:\ or E:. Exit the command prompt, then try running the game.

If this doesn’t work, say so. There is more we can do, i just don’t want to overkill it :stuck_out_tongue:

IT worked! Thanks very much! I owe you one

I know the problem is solved, but i have to ask; I’m pretty certain BG1 was not DOS based. Not my BG1 at least. You on some special version?

Incidentally, it ran just fine natively for me, no patching needed (may have needed to set compatability, cant remember…).

Yea i didn’t need to patch either, he just must of had a corrupted file, or one that had been edited in a way the game didn’t expect.

Glad it worked

yeah BG isn’t dos based, just a corupted file. Weird thing is that newer games ran fine, while my older ones wouldn’t even load
