Chef resigns from South Park

Christians, Jews, Muslims, Mormons and Scientologists have been raked over the comic coals of Comedy Central’s South Park, and Isaac Hayes, who voices the character Chef, says he won’t stand for it anymore.

“There is a place in this world for satire, but there is a time when satire ends and intolerance and bigotry towards religious beliefs of others begins,” the 63-year-old soul singer and outspoken Scientologist said in a statement.

“Religious beliefs are sacred to people, and at all times should be respected and honored,” he continued. “As a civil rights activist of the past 40 years, I cannot support a show that disrespects those beliefs and practices.”

“South Park” co-creator Matt Stone has a different take. “This is 100 percent having to do with his faith of Scientology,” he told the Associated Press. “He has no problem – and he’s cashed plenty of checks – with our show making fun of Christians.”

A top-rated episode in November targeted the Church of Scientology and such celebrity followers as Tom Cruise and John Travolta. Titled “Trapped in the Closet,” the segment featured fourth-grader Stan being hailed as a reluctant savior by Scientology leaders, while a cartoon Cruise locks himself in a closet and refuses to come out.

Stone said that he and co-creator Trey Parker “never heard a peep out of Isaac in any way until we did Scientology. He wants a different standard for religions other than his own, and to me, that is where intolerance and bigotry begin.”

Stone and Parker have accepted Hayes’s resignation, according to news reports.

Can you say hypocrite?

Yes, yes I can. H-Y-O-P-O-C-R-I-T-E.

This is the beginning of the end of South Park. :frowning:

bad thing is, i know many christian (somewhat devout ones too) are not rankled by the show, as its just humor. look at anything mainstream today, everything is just messing with religion.

About time.

I stopped watching when Mr. Garrison got a sex change.

I have a feeling he was just looking for a reason to quit, he hasn’t played much of a role in the show after seaon 4 or so.

Aw man, that sucks. I agree that this will probably be the beginning of the end for South Park. If not that, then atleast it will get worse in quality, although depending on who you ask, it has been getting worse in quality since it was first conceived.

Chef has barely even been in any of the recent episodes.

I don’t think it will effect the show very much.

Mr. Garrison’s sex change killed it for me. I was even liking the episodes up to that one too.

I still like the Mormon episode. >.>b

The Ginger episode was amazing.

“How about lava? You guys got enough lava?”

Nah man, it’s all about Awesmoe 4000!!!

Dey Took our JERBS!

Meh, I think SP still has a few good seasons left in it…and dey took our JERBS!

Why does scientology have to ruin everything? :too bad: :too bad:

Step 1: Get angry and quit.
Step 2: ???
Step 3: PROFIT!

I look forward to the episode in which Chef is written out/explained away. I expect Mr. Stone and Mr. Parker to be humorous without mercy.

High Five

  1. I still think South Park is really funny

  2. This probably won’t stop them. Their original actress that did all the girls in the cast commited suicide a long time ago, and they still managed to find someone to replace her. What makes you think the chances are so slim that they’ll find a replacement for The Chef?

I still like the weapons episode. The swerve at the end was pretty funny.

this show is still on the air?

i would have thought the undiscriminating potty mouth would have worn thin a few years ago.
