I have some bad news for anyone who did the Firefox study I posted earlier… there seems to be a bug with one of the scripts (either server-side or client-side) that prevented the data from being sent. >_< Unfortunately I have to do it all over again!
Here’s the new bit: Anyone who takes part in the study is entered into a draw for a $50.00 cash prize! (There’s also two $10.00 second prizes.) Not bad for about thirty seconds of work! The odds for winning are also pretty good.
The extension should be compatible with all stable releases of Firefox (1.0x and 1.5). I’d like as many people as possible to take part so our data can really be useful!
More information and instructions are available here: http://www.cs.yorku.ca/~orner/webstats.html
Sorry for the inconvenience, but I’d really like it for you guys to try again! Thanks so much!
Wait, I just restarted Firefox after installation and got a message saying “Webstats has finished collecting statistics. Please uninstall” even though I installed the new version (And had uninstalled the old one a while ago). Is this a problem?
Unable to connect
Firefox can’t establish a connection to the server at www.cs.yorku.ca
I got the exact same message Cid. Let us know if there is a problem.
Ah… sorry. Do the following:
Go to the URL “about:config”
On the text box that appears, type “webstats”
You should see a bold entry that says “webstats.finished”. Double-click it to turn it to “false”. That’s it.
Done, it’s working now… or at least it’s not giving any new messages.
…I downloaded it an nothing came up! Do I still have to change it or did I make a boo-boo?
And yay for saying to look in the config for webstats shit. Now I know not to browse my porno until January 12th. I can deal with that.
edit Cid, do you know if the Back Is Close and TabBrowserPreferences extentions alter this in any significant method?
They might, but probably not in any significant fashion. If you could turn them off for the duration, that’d be best, but if you really like them, leave them on and don’t worry about it.
Cavelcade: Did you install it or just download it? Did you have it before?
…Well, I think I had the old downloaded, but I never got round to extracting it to the proper destination.
This one got installed as an extension and said “This will be activated (or whatever) next time you restart Mozilla.” Which was after I turned off my computer. Since I was too lazy to do it at the time. >>;
If you are saying that you restart Firefox and you get no message, that’s not a problem. You don’t get any confirmation or anything, but if you check in Tools->Extensions you can see it’s installed.
The Ruda has installed it. You shall soon be aware of the porn sites I download from.
Let me reiterate that I’m not going to see any of the URLs you visit. 8p
Out of curiosity, it’s because you can’t see them, or simply because you are too scared?
Because I can’t. 8p Because I figured if I could, no one would want to do the study.
Too many people would be afraid of piracy whatnot being used against them.
The extension is open source (like any extension) and anyone who wants can glance at the source code to see what it does.
