Basic Reading Comprehension

I’ve been noticing a lot of article threads lately, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. I enjoy reading them. But the comments afterwards… dissappoint me. Not necessarily because they have a dissenting opinion or whatnot, I welcome that. I think that this forum is an appropriate place for debate. But what I do not like is the countless number of people who only read part of the article or simply only read part of it. This can create big problems; such as a complete misunderstanding of what an article is about.

Anybody have any other gripes about the reading abilities of our fellow posters, and they are welcome to post them here.

<img src=“http://www.rpgclassics.com/staff/tenchimaru/td.gif”> Yes, you people need to write proper English so it’s easier for us to read! Damn you all!

Despite the irony of TD’s post, he’s right, it’s hard to grasp the concept of horrid English skills.

I don’t really have a problem with people looking like idiots in this forum, it’s best to stay silent and figuretively point and laugh.

But really, what I can’t stand is a bandwagon of article threads just for the hell of it. No really, some of it is just not worth reading , or half of us don’t give a shit anyways. It always bugs me when someone justs posts a link and then purposely does not add their own brilliant commentary along with it. I mean dammit, man, if you start the thread, state your own opinion along with the link, since you’re the one presenting the material. Anyone can just copy and paste a link and say nothing. I know it sounds really anal, but it aggravates me to no end, part of the reason why I ignore most article threads if they’re done continuously by a specific group of (boring) people.

EDIT: Ah thread derailment because of proper english skills. Some people just aren’t blessed and fortunate like the rest of us to have the gift of reading and writing proper english. How dare they.

What? We are expected to read the articles? What are you? Some kind of lunatic man that actually think articles are meant to be read beyond the titles and subtitles and maybe the ingress?

But seriously, I normally read the whole article. But sometimes they’re simply too boring to be read thoroughly, the result being that I only read a little and hope I’ve extracted and grasped what it is about. Sometimes I like to think I’m successful, and as I know very well, sometimes I’m not. I will normally answer very generally and diffuse anyway. Just like politician. *Nod, nod.

I think it’s because people have gotten used to compressed information on the internet and reading lengthy articles is like reading a novel.

Psh. I read looooong stuff on the internet all the time.

One example of something I’ve read recently. Not exactly light reading. =p

<img src=“http://www.rpgclassics.com/staff/tenchimaru/td.gif”> I was kidding. Funny. Haha?

Humour, such a difficult concept. It is not logical.

A lot are excused and have good reasons for not having understood article, but there are also a whole lot who obviously haven’t read the article. Of course, sometimes there might also be good reasons for that: Such as the article being dry as a bone and not having any paragraphs. Make the text lively and easy to read and everyone would read it, at least those who clicked the link.

Well Nulani, to that I say:

If you couldn’t read the article because it was so boring.

DON’T

POST!

How are you to know and discuss what is mentioned in the article if you did not read it through? You most likely can’t.

Who said I would post? Did I use the word I?

It was a criticism directed toward those who write the articles, not an excuse. Not that they would read it. Of course, it also could be applied to post and thread writes. Any written work really.

I was attempting to use the same kind of sarcasm, dude. I need to work on it -_-;;

<img src=“http://www.rpgclassics.com/staff/tenchimaru/td.gif”> Sarcasm is so hard to get right online. Le sigh.

Well, yeah. Since there is very little way to tell what tone people speak on the internet, sarcasm is quite hard to get. Its also very hard to tell who is being friendly towards you, who just snapped at you… et cetera.

This is usually why there are indicators showing your tone, such as emoticons or actions or specific punctuation.

Why not just learn to deal with it, rather than griping about it?

Because I am not the one with the problem. I think that somebody has a problem if they go into a topic and just spout off whatever comes off the top of their head, or whatever they THINK the topic is about. I am not the one who needs to change, the people who make these mistakes are the ones who need to do so.

Also, I’m not just griping- I’m pointing this mistake out, rather politely I’d think. Maybe they didn’t even know they were making these mistakes.

Indeed, I believe Cyber has a point, and I for one am grateful he pointed it out. It IS a problem when people comment on a thread but are way off topic because they didn’t bother to read the whole article. It derails the thread.

BTW, Cyb, you may read a lot online -and I’m glad you do- but I get the impression most people don’t, and not just in the Net. I often ask people around here what a certain Headline in a newpaper is about, and they often cannot tell me more than the obvious- meaning, they didn’t read the article well. However, I’m actually hoping that, as the Net grows into our culture, reading will become ingrained into society (I think we’re just watching a change in generations… like when TV took over our lives.)

::dekar!:: -Wh!? Wil and Cyber agreeing on something???
:hyperven: -It’s a sign of the Apocalipse!!!

Usually when people post links to articles, I read the whole thing. You know, so I don’t act like an idiot when I post. Who knows, there could be important info in the article that you wouldn’t find in the headlines alone.

And about reading on the internet, I don’t always use the internet just to read. Sometimes I will when I need info for a report I’m doing for school or when I’m reading fanfics… but I don’t think that counts… I prefer books or newspapers over the internet when it comes to reading.

I find it highly unlikely that anyone would admit to it, but it is an annoying problem.
