You know, in all my time on the boards, I never remember ever trying to have a discussion about Bad Religion. They’re my favorite band. Anyone heard/heard of them?
if you’re new to Bad Religion, and are not partial to punk rock, I reccomend getting songs from about 1998 and up. They have their songs for everyone in times before that, but for non-punk rock fans, they’re far and few between, or something. Besides that, the newer CDs are nicer musically.
I like Bad Religion… but their songs seem a little formulaic to me. IE- they stick with a formulae and just fill in the lyrics. But I really don’t see much of a problem with that, as I like the formulae.
I am impressed how they stayed around as long as they have. I mean, they were around in the early eighties and are still around. I mean… there are bands that are still around, but they aren’t the same. I mean, there is Dead Kennedys, but its a fracking scab band (Oh, and Jello Biafra, the guy who wrote and performed in all of the original songs, doesn’t get ANY money when you buy their records). And I even saw there was a Sex Pistols reunion concert, when Sid Vicious is DEAD.
Well, it’s not like Bad Religion has never gone through lineup changes theirselves. I can think of…7 different lineups they’ve had. But, then again they still have the majority of their original members (3, 4 if you count Hetson from the Circle Jerks). I guess it’s an added perk of starting early. None of their band members are even 40 years old yet, and the band is 23 years old.
There is a difference between a change in lineup and the removal of the person that made the band the band. Jello Biafra = Dead Kennedys as far as I’m concerned.
I don’t really associate a specific person with Bad Religion.

And it’s not the first one, either. They did one of these reunion tours in '96.
Of course, Alleged Bassist Sid Vicious wasn’t the original bass “player” for the Pistols; the '96 tour featured – as I presume this tour will as well – original bassist Glen Matlock, who was replaced by Sid in a “Pete Best for Ringo Starr” sort of move by Malcom McLaren; i.e. replace the talented musician with someone less musically ept but who “looks the part” better.
[And if you look at the songwriting credits for the Pistols, you’ll find most of their songs are credited to Cook/Jones/Rotten/Matlock, rather than Cook/Jones/Rotten/Vicious. If you ever wondered who that Matlock guy was, no, he was not a ghostwriter studio musician, he was actually in the band for a while, before they got truly infamous.]
By the way…
“Recipe For Hate” + “Stranger Than Fiction” + “No Substance” = Kaiser’s Bad Religion collection. Just in case anybody wanted to get back on topic.
Since I like a lot of their older stuff… AND a lot of their newer stuff… what would be a good CD for me to buy? What would be the best for me to start off with? Is there an album that just SCREAMS “Bad Religion” as much as, say, The Dark Side of the Moon SCREAMS "Pink Floyd?
Eh Flint, I head the entire band was 15 when they started in 1980, so by that information, none of the three original band members should be 40 But now that I think about it, any of the other three band members might very well be over over 40.
And the two all around best BR albums are probly Stranger than Fiction, and The Process of Belief.
I’ve only heard a couple songs of theirs. The only reason for that is becaause I own Crazy Taxi.
One of those songs, “Them and Us”, is one of my favorate songs.
BR is alright. Awfully repetitive though after you’ve heard a few songs. I recommend downloading The Defense, I think it’s their best song (of the ones I’ve heard).

(In spite of my sidebar info, I do like BR more than I like Avril.) [/b]
i have HEARD several tracks of bad religion actually, on tv channels like mtv or mcm,
i have also heard enough of punk and ska to form my opinion about those genres, from what i heard, those punk bands are all basically the same…like they’re all following the same recipie or someting, it’s very lame…but, meh, i guess when you look at it that way, the other genres are the same…
Are you kidding me? There is a big difference between Bad Religion and, say… Dead Kennedys and Anti-Flag and The Sex Pistols and The Ramones. Listen to those four bands, and tell me that they are the same damned thing.
EDIT: And old ska is actually pretty good. Check out Madness.
I agree with Roun. BR does have a bit of a formula to their songs, but it’s still a good one, and their lyrics are good enough that it makes up for it. I think their sound is becoming more unique though, especially on The Process of Belief. You especially notice it on The Defense.
