Among other manga (Nausicaa, DiGi Charact, Nadesico), I bought volume 1 of Azumanga Daioh.
I liked it when I wasn’t going “WTF?!”.
Opinons/recommendations for similar manga/etc?
Yeah, I bought that less than a week ago! It rocks! I personally like it more than the anime; it’s much quicker to the point, and you know what they say: “Brevity is the soul of wit”.
I can’t think offhand of another manga that’s just so wacky. Although Love Hina is a bit of a romantic comedy (with a bit of focus for the guys, what with the multiple ecchi-but-not-quite-hentai scenes).
What about Excel Saga? Though I think that’s wackier than Azumanga…
Maybe, but Azumanga Daioh has that unique “shorts” format like you’d find in any given comics page in America.

And I’ve read Excel Saga. I liked it. But I’m looking for something less over-the-top.
