which edition of AD&D are we talking about?

Every level-up they can choose to sink skill points into their Open Lock skill (dex based) to buy Ranks in it. A Rogue gets (8 + Intelligence Modifier) x4 Skill Points at 1st level, and gains an additional 8 + Intelligence Modifier Skill Points with each level-up. Since Open Lock is a class skill of the Rogue, it only costs 1 Skill Point to buy a Rank in Open Lock. Your maximum rank in a class skill is your level + 3. So at 1st level you can have a max of 4 Ranks in Open Lock, at 2nd level you can have a max of 5 Ranks in Open Lock, etc.

To make a skill check, roll:

1d20 + skill modifier (Skill modifier = skill rank + ability modifier (dex for Open Lock) + miscellaneous modifiers (magic effects etc))

When making a skill check, you’re either trying to score a Difficulty Class (DC) which is known to the DM, or you’re trying to beat another character’s check. For instance, the DC on a chest is 24. At level 1, with 18 dexterity and 4 ranks in Open Lock, you’d need to roll a 16 (+4 from your ranks, +4 from your ability modifier = 24). However, you can also make an opposed skill check with another character. For instance, you’re trying to sneak past a guard. In order to pass it without him noticing you, your Move Silently check needs to be higher than the guard’s Listen check.

This is for 3.0 ed, though.

3e annoys me. But I’m gonna have to get used to it since I’m gonna be running a dwarven fighter in a friend of mine’s campaign. I offered him access to all my 1e and 2e books, but he wants to play 3e only.

The number’s twenty-five, if Baldur’s Gate is accurate.

Don’t you have a Player’s Handbook?
