Fingers that I can use at the moment anyhow. So on the way to Gigantour, I hopped into the back of a blazer. Only way for me to shut the back window was to pull the latch down and move my finger… well, my finger got caught and I couldn’t move it quick enough. So my middle finger got caught and smashed in the lock. There’s a layer of skin thats been pulled back, the fingernail itself was pulled upward at a weird angle from the back and had to be pushed back down into place, the wound from behind the nail was bleeding profusely, and I managed to break the tip of that finger into 3. Went to the hospital, got fixed up, and went on to Gigantour.
Having gone to the doc’s office today, I’ve found out that:
Surgery probably wouldn’t help the bone
My fingernail may or may not permanently fall off
The bone may become highly sensitive to cold and what not, almost like having arthritis. There’s also a chance that it may begin to lack sensitivity and have more of a numbed feeling.
I’m really hoping that it just heals back perfectly, since it becoming sensitive might make guitar playing a bitch. However if it came down to that, I guess I’d just have to fight through it or learn to play left handed
Yeah that’s about what I told you on MSN when we talked about it; I wasn’t sure exactly what surgery could do considering its so small and the nature of the injury would lend to complications with the healing (as your doc told you about your nail and the sensitivity). Good luck!
Something similar happened when I smashed my thumb in a window latch. Was hanging on by a thread, nail fell off, etc. Thing works perfectly now, just a minor scar. It’s also a little bit more sensitive to heat, cold and pain, but nothing too terrible.
If your finger falls off from rot you may look back on this post and curse me for it.
Hades: You’re not far off, really. Megadeth wasn’t that great live. In Flames and Bodom though… holy shit.
Curtis: Everyone keeps telling me that. When I got it out of the latch and seen it all I could say was “Fuckfuckfuckfuck holy shit HOSPITAL fuckfuckfuckfuckDAMMIT.”
TD: Heh, I was kinda worried about that. Thanks for sharing though, not as worried How sensitive is the skin where the nail was and how sensitive is your thumb to applying pressure?
Well, I grew a new nail because I’m a hardass. On the whole I’d say it’s about twice times as sensitive to pressure as any other finger, mostly near the nail’s edges, but it’s not even close to being painful. I did have some trouble for the first few years though, with my nail growing through my exposed flesh. Proper nail clipping would probably have fixed that, but eh, effort.
Something similar happened to me when I was like 6. Caught my right index finger in the frame of collapsible bed. At the time I was afraid it had snapped in half (my whole forearm was covered in blood) but it looked worse than it was. Thankfully it healed well enough- I still have the scar, but otherwise my hand works OK. Hope you recover as well soon.
:ark:

Well if we’re sharing finger stories, uh…
Doorhinge?
That’s weird, cause when I was little I caught my right index finger in a doorhinge and I also still have a scar. I guess everyone’s messed their fingers up at some point
Ouch, hope you get better soon. Once when I was about 8, I was being a dumbass and broke my finger in a car window 'cause i pressed the button the wrong way and tried to pull my finger out. Now all I have is a scar where I pulled the skin off and I can bend my finger in weird ways.
Make sure to keep the edges trimmed. All of them. The nail can grow a bit to the side, ending up with the previously alluded to flesh piercing. That makes a hole in your flesh which it will continue growing into, so don’t give it a chance. Also, make sure the outer edge actually leaves your finger, instead of bending downwards into it.
